Chapter 43 Midnight Mission
Caroline couldn’t help but laugh as she dabbed some cream on Raven’s paw. “It’s fine; it’ll be better in a few days.”
Then a thought struck her. What if the spring water in my storage space works better than this stuff?
She poured a little of the spring water onto her own arm.
To her amazement, the cut healed right before her eyes.
Caroline’s heart raced in excitement. The water was even more powerful than she thought.

After eating something and sparring with Raven for a while, she turned to her real task for the day–brewing lemon tea.
She hauled out two large pots, filled them with sugar, tea leaves, and lemon slices, and set them to boil.
The rich smell filled the room. For more than an hour, she let them simmer until the tea was thick and golden. By nightfall, her storage shelves were packed with hundreds of jars of lemon tea.
These would be lifesavers once the deep freeze came.
Over the next few days, she decided, she would focus on making some stews and drinks. They would keep her alive when things got worse.
But around seven that evening, Caroline noticed the rain outside had gotten heavier.
The drops were the size of marbles, hammering down hard.
She peeked out the window. The shop awnings across the street were already corroding.
The water, which had only reached the steps before, now swallowed the first floor of the delivery building.
Caroline lifted her brows.
Tonight was the night for her to make her move.
Raven wasn’t happy about having to use the litter box inside.
Caroline crouched down and explained to him. “We can’t go out now. Too many neighbors are watching.”
The dog still looked grumpy, but he obeyed.
When Raven was done, they went back to bed. Caroline set her alarm for 12:30 a.m.
Tonight, she had a big plan to carry out.
Raven didn’t understand why she was going to sleep so early, but he never argued.
Whatever she did, he followed with no question. So he curled up and dozed beside her.
The alarm dragged Caroline out of sleep right on time.
She slipped into her black night gear and clipped Raven’s leash. They headed downstairs.

The lobby was already dark and half flooded.

Security guards had stopped coming a few days ago. The water pressed against sandbags at the entrance, but she knew by‘ tomorrow even those wouldn’t hold.
The water would probably have flooded the floor.
Braving the wind and rain, Caroline swam across the flooded street with Raven beside her.
The water was full of floating trash and broken wood. Her whole body was soaked, and the acid rain stung wherever it touched her skin. The pain was sharp, like tiny needles pricking her arms and neck.
Caroline knew what it was; the acid was eating away at her skin.
But she didn’t panic. She understood what this rain could do, and she wasn’t afraid of it.
From her angle, Raven actually looked kind of cool swimming next to her. His dog paddle was serious and steady, his furry face focused like a little soldier on a mission. She couldn’t help but find it funny.
The streetlights had gone out long ago. Only the dark sky and the splashing sound of water surrounded them. Trash drifted past, but the distance wasn’t far. Within minutes, Caroline and Raven reached the opposite side.
There, they saw the first floor of the building was already underwater.
Without hesitation, Caroline pulled out her tools and began picking the lock on the door.
It was already one in the morning, but the whole city lay silent and frozen. Caroline didn’t dare turn on any bright lights.
She took out a small flashlight with a dim yellow glow she had prepared earlier.
That way, even if someone looked from far away, they wouldn’t notice them.
She stepped through the ankle–deep water and entered the room. It was a large space used to store the packages. Near the entrance stood a table piled with papers, a calculator, and a computer–probably what the workers used to check prices and track deliveries.
Inside, the place was packed from wall to wall with boxes–some wrapped in plastic bags, others stacked neatly on metal shelves.
