Since someone had moved in across the hall, Caroline was extra cautious. She doublechecked the locks before letting Raven and the parrot out.

She had no idea what had happened between the two inside the storage space, but something was definitely off. The parrot, once loud and full of attitude, now drooped its head and looked at Raven with a mix of fear and unease.

After flying out, he landed quietly on Caroline’s shoulder, head down, not making a sound.

What’s this about? Did you two have a fight?Caroline teased, poking the parrot gently. The bird shrank its neck and stayed quiet.

Raven, meanwhile, looked grumpy. At one glance, Caroline could tell he wasn’t in a good mood.

Before Caroline could figure out what was going on, Raven turned around.

And there, right on his big fluffy butt, was a blob of bird poop.

Pfft!

Caroline burst out laughing.

Haha! Raven, you got nailed! You got hit by bird poop!

Birdsespecially parrotshad no control over their business. They went wherever they wanted, anytime.

Caroline suddenly realized this could be a real problem.

The last thing she wanted in the middle of an apocalypse was scrubbing bird poop off every corner of the house. That would drive her nuts.

Then she remembered, while scavenging for pet supplies, she’d picked up a box labeled poop catchers.

With a thought, she summoned the box from her storage space.

She grabbed a pair of scissors, opened the box, and found a bunch of colorful little parrot diapers.

They were the kind that fit around a parrot like tiny waterproof outfitsdesigned to catch the mess before it ever reached the floor.

Besides the mini outfits, the box was also packed with stacks of birdsized disposable pads.

Without a second thought, Caroline pulled out a blue one, fitted it with a pad, and put it on the parrot.

The parrot didn’t struggle at all, as if it had worn one before. But its little head still hung low. They were clearly not happy about it.

Caroline smiled and reached out to pat its head. Hey, what’s your name, buddy?

The parrot lifted his head, his round black eyes glimmering like gems. He turned them twice, tilting his head from side to side, looking absolutely adorable.

Just when Caroline thought the little bird wasn’t going to answer, the parrot suddenly spoke. Jet! Jet!

The grey parrot flapped its wings excitedly and bounced up and down. Jet! Jet!he chirped again, nodding his head nonstop.

Caroline couldn’t help rolling her eyes. Who names a parrot Jet? What was that person thinking?

But after thinking about it, she had to admit, it fit perfectly.

The bird was grey, and both jets and parrots could fly.

Alright, Jet,she said with a smile. This is your home now. I’m Caroline, and this here is Raven.

She pointed at herself, then at the big dog beside her.

Jet seemed thrilled when Caroline introduced herselfbut the moment her finger pointed toward Raven, the parrot froze.

His wings folded tight, head lowered. His whole body shrank as if he were terrified.

Caroline couldn’t help laughing at the sight. She found the parrot amusing.

She patted Raven, who didn’t look too happy after being pooped on by the bird. Come on, buddy, she said. Let’s get you cleaned up.

Both Caroline and Raven were covered in acid rain residue from their earlier adventure. Their skin was showing signs of irritation and wounds.

Caroline mixed some of her spring water from the storage space with hot water. It would clean their skin and help it heal.

After the bath, she looked at her reflection and gasped. The sores that had been red and raw just a while ago were completely gone. Her skin was smooth and glowing, even softer than before. She couldn’t help but smile. Well, storage space never disappoints.”

Once the girl and her dog were freshly clean and warm, they crawled into bed. It was six in the morning, and the first light of dawn was slipping through the curtains.

Caroline set Jet’s cage in the living room but didn’t close the door. Then she wrapped her arms around Raven and drifted off to sleep.
