“Hey, we’ve been friends for years,” the first man said. “Not many people left on this floor. We have to look out for each other.”
“Yeah,” the other man replied with a sigh. “You still got food? I didn’t stock up enough, and now … man.”
The first man hesitated. “Well, I’ve got kids and a dog at home. Don’t even know what to do. At this rate, that dog might have to go first.”
Caroline let out a cold snort in her mind and stopped listening.
She glanced at the floor number–23rd.
Caroline made a mental note of it. If she ever runs into these two later, she’d better stay alert.
From their conversation, she could tell they both had some awareness about the apocalypse.
Still, they clearly didn’t have much food stored.
If they were already panicking this early, it wouldn’t be long before they started stealing, maybe even doing something worse.
Caroline kept climbing. The rest of the way was quiet.
She noticed some residents had piled furniture and junk in front of their doors, probably realizing what was coming.
Caroline stopped once to rest, panting. She thought to herself, climbing stairs was no joke.
When she reached the 58th floor, she suddenly heard someone crying softly in the hallway.
It was a woman.
Caroline slowed down, making her steps as light as possible so she wouldn’t be heard.
The woman seemed lost in her sobs and didn’t notice anyone nearby.
Caroline quietly peeked from the stairwell. The woman was surrounded by piles of belongings. She was sorting through them while crying.
Caroline noticed that many of the items were water–damaged. She guessed this woman must be the one who lived on the first floor.
The woman was small and frail, barely five feet tall. She might’ve been pretty once, but now her hair was tangled, her face streaked with dirt and tears. She looked worn out and messy.
Caroline frowned. Watching the woman struggle alone to move all that stuff made her even more disgusted with the man of this household.
Just then, a man’s angry voice exploded from the apartment. “All you did was cry! Did you ever shut up? You’re so loud! Want me to give you something to cry about?”
The woman instantly clamped her hands over her mouth, too scared to make another sound.

But the man didn’t stop there. Still fuming, he stormed out of the apartment and began to beat her. His punches and kicks came
hard and fast.
The woman fell to the floor, curling up and shielding her head, sobbing quietly as the man continued to hit her.
He was drunk. His eyes glazed, his strikes wild and heavy.
After a few long minutes, he finally stopped.
Before heading back inside, he kicked her one last time and spat, “Useless bitch!”
The woman stayed on the floor, barely moving, trembling as she tried to crawl closer to her scattered belongings.
Caroline’s jaw tightened, and her hands balled into fists. What a disgusting piece of trash!
But Caroline had seen far worse things in the apocalypse.
People dismembered in the streets. Parents selling their children. Men forcing their wives to trade their bodies for food.
Violence was only the most primitive form of cruelty.
She shook her head. Other people’s family messes weren’t her business. She didn’t plan to get involved. Besides, she couldn’t risk revealing that she’d been sneaking across the street to collect supplies. So, she hurried upstairs.
Still, she remembered that couple on the 58th floor.
That one might be trouble.
The man was clearly violent. The woman–weak and submissive. But weak women, under too much pressure, could go either way.
Some turned into accomplices. Others fought back.
Only time would tell.
Caroline kept climbing while the beaten woman was still down.
When she passed the floor below hers, she noticed someone had welded an old security gate across the exit, sealing it completely.
She raised an eyebrow. Smart girls. At least those two have some sense,
