Chapter 57 Teammate

Tyler used to live on the sixth floor. But with the constant downpour and rising floodwaters, he began to grow worried.
He was 28. He’d grown up in the country but had spent the past few years abroad. He had come back recently for business and never expected the acid rain and endless storms would trap him here for good.
Tyler had once carried out extremely dangerous missions, which gave him a sharp sense of intuition.
So when everyone else around him kept shouting things like, “Help is coming!” or “The government won’t abandon us!“, Tyler had started stocking up on supplies and moving to higher floors.
When Caroline opened the door, she finally saw the man standing outside.
Tall, broad–shouldered, and strong, his muscles were clearly defined under his shirt.
He looked like someone who had been through real combat–dangerous, even, she thought to herself.
What she didn’t know was that Tyler was sizing her up at the same time.
Her simple clothes couldn’t hide her beauty–smooth skin, long silky hair, rosy cheeks, and bright eyes.
Tyler had met many beautiful women, but Caroline’s beauty was different.
Especially now, in a world falling apart.
Everyone around them was living in fear. Even those with food at home didn’t dare eat much. Their nerves were on edge, their minds filled with panic. Most looked pale, thin, and hopeless.
But Caroline was different. She stood tall and alert, her mind clear, her reactions calm and steady. There was a quiet strength in her, something far more mature than her years.
“You said you want to take down the other apartment doors on this floor to build a stronger defense for us?”
Caroline spoke, cutting off Tyler’s silent observation.
Tyler nodded and explained, “I used to live on the sixth floor. Yesterday, I saw the first floor completely underwater. People are getting desperate. Some have already started complaining about food shortages and are planning to break into empty apartments for supplies.”
The meaning was clear.
Chaos hadn’t fully broken out yet, so now was the time to strengthen their defenses.
Caroline gave a cold, short laugh. “And why should I believe you? You could claim it’s for protection, but once the doors are down, we’d all be sitting ducks trapped inside.”
Tyler looked at her with clear admiration. “Miss…
“You can call me Ms. Sinclair.”
“Ms. Sinclair,” he repeated with a faint smile. “I like your honesty and courage. To earn your trust, I’ll start by introducing myself.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a certificate.

Caroline instinctively took the document from him. It was a cream–colored certificate with the bold words “Discharge Certificate” printed on it.
She raised an eyebrow. So, this guy is a retired soldier.
He said firmly, “I can swear to you. I’ll never raise a hand against you unless it’s absolutely necessary.”
Caroline gave a small laugh. “Unless necessary?”
Tyler nodded slightly, a faint smile touching his lips. “Yes. If you try to kill me, I’ll fight back.”
Caroline looked straight into his light brown eyes and saw it–seriousness.
He wasn’t joking. Not even a little.
She handed the paper back to him. “Mr. Lowland, I don’t have any reason to kill you. So, for now, we can work together.”
Tyler caught that key phrase immediately. “For now?” he repeated.
Caroline crossed her arms, mimicking his earlier tone. She wore a teasing smile, “Yes, for now. After all, we barely know each other.”
They both smiled, saying nothing more.
Just then, Raven pushed the door open and padded out.
The moment Tyler saw the dog, a slight twitch flickered at the corner of his eye, but it was so quick that Caroline didn’t notice.
