When Raven heard her words, his face immediately drooped. He gave a notsofriendly glance at the parrot perched on Caroline’s shoulder.

Caroline got it right away. Raven was jealous!

He thought she was taking Jet to the rooftop without him.

I’m just taking Jet out for an acid rain bath,Caroline explained briefly. Then I’ll wash him with spring water when we get back.

At the mention of acid rain bathand spring water,Raven gave the parrot another dark look, but he didn’t seem upset anymore.

It was already past eleven at night.

In this world without electricity or running water, people went to bed early.

Most of the neighbors were already asleep. Tyler, next door, should be too.

Caroline went straight to work. To stay quiet, she first placed the noisy Jet into her storage space. Then she slipped on soft shoes, pulled a cap over her head. She carefully walked past Tyler’s door before heading up to the rooftop.

Tonight, her goal wasn’t just to give Jet an acid rain bath.

She’d been tracking the acid rain’s pattern and knew this was when the acid reached its strongest concentration.

It was the perfect time to bathe and collect it.

For the next few days, the rain would stay this acidity level.

By then, many people’s homes would start leaking.

Back when she had her apartment walls repainted, Caroline had also paid the workers to coat several other apartments in the building.

She even had them reinforce the roof using topquality materials.

Caroline didn’t want other people’s crumbling walls to end up damaging hers.

Because of her, everyone in the building had unknowingly benefited.

Still, her apartment had an extra layer of protectiondoublecoated with anticorrosion paint.

Caroline had done that to prepare for stronger acid rain in this life.

So far, she hadn’t heard of anyone in the building having leaks. That meant the acid’s strength was about the same as last time.

But from her window, she could see that many other buildings nearby corroding into ruins.

Her plan was to fill every bucket she had with acid rain. Later, those who hadn’t yet mutated or hadn’t absorbed enough acid rain, might be able to rebuild their bodies with it.

Caroline reached the rooftop and found her two buckets already full.

She carried them away and set down two empty ones in their place.

The entire rooftop was covered in waterat least three feet deep, enough to swim in.

Since no one was around, she dove into the acid rain and swam toward a hidden corner.

Then she summoned Jet from the storage space.

The parrot appeared, looking completely confused.

He flapped its wings, circling Caroline twice and squawking, Go home! Go home!

Caroline chuckled and patted her shoulder. Come here, Jet,she said. Sit tight.

Jet looked reluctant but finally landed on Caroline’s shoulde.

Caroline ignored him and focused her mind, filling each bucket with acid rain.

It took more than half an hour to finish.

Jet grew restless several times, but Caroline managed to calm him down with her secret weaponsnacks.

She fed him pine nuts one by one until his beak was too busy chewing to complain.

Caroline had just finished filling the last bucket and was ready to leave when something caught her eye. Far away, in the corner of the rooftop, two glowing red dots flickered in the darkness.

They were about the size of pingpong ballsbright, steady, and locked right on her.

Her breath hitched. She was alarmed.

The city had lost power long ago. There shouldn’t be any lights anywhere. Yet those glowing dots hovered motionless above the floodwater.

Jet shifted nervously on her shoulder, feathers puffing up. The parrot flapped his wings and screeched, Bad thing! Bad thing!

Then the dots moved.

Caroline froze as the shape behind them slid closer. Her pupils shrank in shock. It was a snake.

A massive blacktailed python.

Not just bigmonstrous. Its body was as thick as a tree trunk, its scales gleaming faintly under the moonlight.
