After exchanging a few words with Tyler through the door, Caroline rose and freshened herself up. She placed a steaming sausage roll on the table with a glass of oat milk, then ate slowly with a look of quiet satisfaction.

Jet seemed brighter today. The terror of yesterday had lifted, and his eyes carried a clearer shine.

She had washed him again in the healing spring’s water after the acid rain, and now his coat gleamed. His gaze held a sharp light, more focused and knowing than before.

When his eyes rested on Raven, his dark pupils spun and circled as though he was turning over hidden plans.

Caroline gave Jet the order to stay at the house and guard it. She left Raven stationed at the stairs. Then she set off with Tyler to continue the scavenging.

Tyler pointed toward a home across the street. “I’ve been thinking. Should we break into the other houses, too? Not just the ones we worked on yesterday?”

Caroline glanced at him, a small smirk touching her lips. This man was already hooked on the hunt.

“We should. Especially the ones with fridges. We should see if there’s anything good. If we wait too long, it’ll all rot.”

Tyler nodded at once, his agreement firm.

The day’s mission was sealed.

They cleared the remaining houses from yesterday first.

Then came the moment that made Caroline’s heart skip. She found a bracelet that made her storage space shiver.

It wasn’t worth much in money.

She traded Tyler a single pack of instant noodles for it.

He tried to wave her off, but she pushed the food into his hands. “We made a deal to work together. That means keeping things fair. Supplies don’t always mean food. One day, it might be blankets, coats, or something else we need to survive. I love this bracelet. For me, it counts as supplies. Don’t argue.”

She said it with intent. If her storage space stirred again, she would not need to explain her need for barter.

Tyler gave in at last. He accepted the noodles with stiff reluctance.

Once those houses were done, they moved to their next target.

Caroline raised her hand toward a storefront marked with a bold sign, “Pet Supply Wholesale.” She gave him a look. “Mr. Lowland,

can we start with this one?”

She remembered the company well.

Before the apocalypse, she had seen their deliveries.
