Chapter 69 Chow Time

For lunch, Caroline ate clam chowder.

It came from an old takeout box, rich with clams floating on top.

She washed it down with a tall glass of lemonade. The cold sweetness cut through the heaviness, and the flavor tasted perfect.

That afternoon, Caroline and Tyler cleared out the last few homes that still had food left.

Caroline barely touched the supplies. She wanted to repay Tyler for the pet food he had given her.

Tyler didn’t argue. He simply took the rest.

When they stepped into the final house, Caroline froze. A foul stench of rot poured from the darkness inside.

She stumbled back a step, her nose wrinkling.

Tyler caught it at once. What’s wrong?

There’s something in there.”

Her voice had barely fallen when a massive black shadow lunged out of the gloom.

It was too fast for her eyes to catch its form.

She hadn’t imagined any living thing inside. She had no weapon ready.

All she could do was throw herself to the side in raw instinct.

The creature twisted in the air with unnatural speed and hurled itself at her face.

Caroline lifted her arm in defense.

As it neared, she finally saw it for what it was.

A rat. A monstrous rat as large as a rabbit.

Its fur bristled in long black spikes.

Its eyes glowed a vicious red, hot as fresh blood. Its teeth flashed white, sharp, and cold under the dim light.

A mutant rat.

Caroline ground her teeth. With a thought, her hand filled with the weight of her hidden knife.

Before she could strike, a blur cut across her vision.

The rat was kicked from midair before it could land a hit on Caroline.

It flew across the room and crashed against the wall. The sound was followed by a shrill, broken scream.

Are you hurt?

Chapter 69 Chow Time

Tyler stood in front of her. His broad frame shielded her completely.

She stared, stunned for a moment, then answered. I’m fine.

Next time, don’t freeze up. Call for me!

His voice was tight, urgent, and edged with worry.

The mutant rat staggered up again. Its body coiled, then it leapt with savage force.

No time to talk. Tyler lunged forward, his steel blade gleaming in his grip.

Caroline slipped her own knife back into her space before he noticed.

Her breath stayed steady, but her mind burned. She had not frozen.

If he had been one second later, her blade would have struck first.

Still, the memory of him being back in front of her stirred something deep in her.

Ten years into the apocalypse, she had never trusted another soul to guard her.

But today, a man had done it.

When the rat lay dead, both of them stood over its body in silence.

Caroline’s thoughts churned. Sixtysix floors. How could it have climbed so high?

Her eyes scanned the room. The window stood cracked open.

It must have crawled up the pipes and squeezed through the gap.

But 66 floors upnothing about it felt right.

Tyler’s voice cut through the quiet. Your dog. Has it mutated, too?

Caroline’s hand paused on the window frame.

She kept silent for a long breath, then answered with the truth. Yes. Raven has grown a lot lately.

She had made her decision. She would work with him. He had saved her life. For now, he was her teammate.

I’ve seen plenty of dogs,Tyler said. In the service, we had the best bloodlines. But I’ve never seen a Doberman that big. Especially the head. The size is off the charts.
