“I can go out and search for supplies. Whatever I find, I’ll split half with you and this man. Back in school, I was a champion swimmer. I’m not afraid of the acid rain outside. And if this disaster ever ends, no matter what I do for work, I’ll give you half of my income every year. Or if you want me to do something else, I’ll do it for you.”
Her voice cracked. Then she let out a bitter laugh. “I’ve already died once. If I can scrape by and keep living, what’s there to treasure about this body?”
The hand pressed against her wounded face tightened.
Caroline was satisfied with Kay’s answer.
She turned to Tyler. After all, this floor was shared between the two of them.
Tyler gave a short nod.
But then, to Caroline’s surprise, he crouched down in front of Kay. His voice was low and sharp. “You forgot one thing.”
Kay stiffened, staring at this tall, dangerous–looking man.
“Revenge. Whoever betrayed you, you pay them back in double.”
His words were slow and heavy, dripping with coldness.
From Caroline’s angle, she saw the hard edge flashing in his eyes.
She liked it. She echoed his words to Kay. “He’s right. You have to take revenge. Pay them back double. Otherwise, you don’t deserve to stay on the 66th floor. Then saving you would have been for nothing.”
When she finished, she gave Tyler an approving look. His nature matched hers.
Caroline pulled out some medicine and treated Kay’s wound, wrapping it with simple bandages.
Kay kept thanking her, knowing how precious medicine was now.
Caroline’s eyes lifted lazily. “When you get better, pay me back.”
She set Kay up in an empty apartment on the east side of the building, right across from Tyler’s.
Caroline yawned. Always running around, never a break. She thought she could finally rest, but something had to happen again.
After a quick wash, she collapsed into bed.
This time, no one disturbed her. When she woke, the sun was already high.
Raven was curled beside her. Jet was in the living room, fiddling with something, making little rustling noises.
Caroline rubbed Raven’s big head. “Morning, Raven.”
The dog leaned into her palm, rare for him.

But that simple nudge made her realized that his head seemed bigger than before.
Her mind jumped to the mutant snake she’d seen days ago.
She began to consider seriously if she should let Raven and Jet evolve sooner?
But if she did, would it hurt them?
After all, acid rain burned like hellfire.
still, she had the healing spring. What if she mixed its water with acid rain? Could it create some strange effect?
