She didn’t say much more and turned back to her room.

The next day slipped by in pure idleness. Aside from the training she had to do and a bit of roughhousing with Raven, Caroline spent nearly all her time lying around.

She ate, then napped, then watched shows, only to eat again while watching more.

It was the very picture of indulgence.

By nightfall, she had finally rested enough. She poured some spring water and acid rain together into a large wooden tub.

She waited. The barrel didn’t corrode. Relief rushed through her.

She waved at Raven. “Come here.”

The dog saw the tub and froze. He knew it meant bath time. His whole body drooped in protest. Every muscle screamed no as if bath time was the worst.

Caroline had to bribe him with snacks. Only then did Raven step in.

Jet circled overhead, cackling. “Hehehe, bath time! Stinky bath time!”

The parrot swooped too close. Raven suddenly stood up and smacked him down into the tub with one big paw.

Caroline froze. Oh no, did Raven just drown him?

But then Jet popped up, soaked and miserable, flapping weakly in the water. Only then did Caroline let out a breath. Clearly, Raven was not someone to mess with.

At least now both pets could bathe together.

Jet tried to climb out several times, but each time Raven swatted him back down.

Even Jet, who was usually terrified of Raven, finally snapped and started cursing at him. “You rotten thing! You-” He sputtered out a string of nonsense, too angry to form real words.

Raven didn’t even flinch. Every time Jet scrambled for the edge, a single swipe of Raven’s paw sent him sliding back down. Again and again, just when he thought he might climb out, Raven

Caroline grabbed another tub for herself, mixed in spring water and acid rain, and climbed in.

She patted both of them on the head. “Come on, let’s all soak together.”

She had warmed the spring water beforehand, and the wooden barrel held its heat well.

Soaking like this eased her fatigue and carried real benefits too.

She even pulled out her tablet, a bowl of fruit salad, and some nuts from her storage.

She soaked in the bath with Raven and Jet beside her, watching a show.

Once the drama started playing, Jet finally went quiet as a mouse.

He floated in the warm water, leaning against Raven, and nibbled on the nuts Caroline passed over now and then.

They soaked for more than two hours.

By the end, Caroline felt drowsy.

When she glanced at the time, it was about right for bed. Caroline lifted Raven and Jet out of the tub, dried them off, then cleaned herself up as well.

She had to admit, the soak had been wonderfully relaxing.

And when she looked at the slightly murky water left in the barrel, she felt certain it had strengthened her body once again.

Raven and Jet had grown tired halfway through.

Caroline dried them carefully and tucked them into bed.

She couldn’t just dump the water down the toilet or the drain,

If she did, the whole building would lose its supply. And if her place still had enough to flush while the others didn’t, it would only stir up jealousy from the neighbors.

She thought for a moment, then stepped into her storage space.

This time, she walked up to the Junk Eater.

To her surprise, it had spit out a pack of compressed biscuits, a decent enough find.
