“D–Don’t come any closer!” Ivor was trembling with fear.

He cursed himself for underestimating that tall guy and for messing with Caroline again.
“We’ll hand over everything we’ve taken! Just spare us!”
Ivor let his massive backpack drop to the floor.
It slammed down with a metallic thud.
The impact split the zipper, revealing a sack overflowing with gold.
“I never meant you guys harm. Please, let me go. I promise I’ll never cross you again.”
The short man trailing Ivor turned pale, stuttering in terror.
He hurled his own pack down as well.
He unzipped it carefully and showed its contents. “Gold and gems. Take it, please!”
The bag was crammed with coins and several little red jewelry boxes.
Tyler said nothing, just gave Caroline a raised–eyebrow look, waiting to see her move.
Caroline found his expression entertaining.
She twirled the dagger between her fingers. “Split it?”
Tyler stayed silent but his body already reacted.
The short man tried to run, but Tyler sprang and slammed him to the ground from behind.
Tyler whipped out his blade and slit the man’s throat in one swift motion.
Fast and merciless, over in a heartbeat.
Ivor bolted without a word, terrified.
Caroline was a step slower, but showed no fear as she flung her dagger, striking Ivor’s leg.
He fell and scrambled, struggling to get upright.

“W–What do you want? The rescue teams are probably watching! The cops will come soon! You can’t kill me!”
Ivor was drenched in sweat, voice trembling.
Caroline snorted. “Too bad. This apocalypse is only getting started. Your police and rescue squads won’t save you.”
She pushed the blade down, cutting his throat open. Blood sprayed everywhere.
Caroline jumped back nimbly, avoiding the torrent.
Seeing Ivor triggered a flashback from her previous life.
Or maybe the sight of those twin brutes had jolted a memory loose.
In her past life she hadn’t lived in this exact building, but she’d been nearby.
After the deep freeze, society collapsed and death was everywhere.
Most supplies had been ruined by acid rain and the cold.
That was when gangs began to form.
Some groups were ordinary folks turned desperate. They’d once had jobs and morals, but survival changed them.
Others had always been vermin; with no law left, their cruelty surfaced.
One gang stuck in her memory.
It was small, but the muscle was twin giants.
Their leader had a sleazy face and sharp, shifty eyes.
Looking back, that leader was Ivor.
Caroline had crossed paths with that group once before in her old life.
They’d cornered two young girls who were just traveling.
The girls were terrified and begged, but the men laughed and ruined them.
