Jonathan couldn’t help thinking back to when Reese messed herself and bawled like a kid, leaving him to clean up the mess. Now, staring at the stunning Caroline, he regretted it all over again.
“Caroline …”
He softened his voice and tilted his head slightly, showing off the angle she’d always liked
before.
“You’re living in a fantasy. Go back to your fifth floor.” Caroline’s tone was cold as she walked off toward the top floor.
Jonathan stood frozen, stunned.
But up ahead, things had already blown up. Two men were throwing punches on the top floor.
The woman they’d chosen to keep order tried stepping in, only to get knocked down with a kick.
And Bethany? She didn’t bother saying a word. She just sat there, scarfing food like she hadn’t eaten in days.
Caroline finally noticed something. The two guys fighting over the supplies were the so–called “buddies” from the 23rd floor, who cooperated.
She thought back to the last time she raided that 12–story apartment building. It was late at night when she went upstairs.
On the 23rd floor, she caught those two whispering, promising they’d stick together no matter what.
apart
Who’d have thought they were tearing each other now?
Bethany was the worst. She didn’t care that the supplies belonged to the whole group. Wrappers already littered the ground around her.
Caroline noticed the stash wasn’t much to begin with. Two bottles of water and a couple of packs of compressed biscuits for each person at most.
Yet within minutes, Bethany had already downed three bottles and was still stuffing compressed biscuits into her mouth.

Caroline didn’t comment. She simply pushed the door open and stepped out.

She brushed past Jonathan, went straight to the stairwell, cracked the door, and shouted, “Go check upstairs! Don’t trample anyone!”
Then, she stepped aside and shared a glance with Tyler. Both of them kept their distance from the crowd.
Outside, people were restless, craning their necks, desperate for news.
When Caroline finally came out and told them to head up, they knew something serious had gone down.
Almost 30 survivors pushed and shoved each other as they rushed up the stairs.
Before long, shouts and fists echoed down the stairs.
Caroline gave Tyler a look. “You saw this coming?”
He snorted. “I’ve seen worse.”
She raised her eyebrows. That answer surprised her.
Amid all the chaos, Caroline and Tyler stood side by side, like two carefree people completely detached from the bustling crowd around them.
Even though they were neighbors, they hadn’t actually spent much time together lately. It was like there was an invisible wall, each staying in their own business.
Still, Caroline had a good impression of Tyler: strong, level–headed, a man of few words who always followed through. Compared to everyone else from the Lowlands, he stood out.
But she knew he carried his own secrets. So, she didn’t want to get too close too fast. Even so, when it came to scavenging or fighting, he made a solid partner.
Tyler quietly studied Caroline, and his opinion of her was just as high.
She was independent, tough, and steady when things got bad. She had her own way of doing things, and it worked.
She kept her guard up, though. Tyler could feel that she didn’t fully trust him yet.
But he wasn’t rushing it. He figured time would fix that.
“Mr. Lowland, are you truly a retired soldier?” Caroline asked suddenly, breaking the silence.
