Alicia thought for a moment, then gave her a quick rundown of what had happened that day.
Eleanor smiled. “Alicia, you went shopping with Edward? Next time, how about you go shopping with me?”
Alicia wasn’t too keen on the idea, but she didn’t know how to turn her down, so she just replied, “Maybe next
time.”
Eleanor could tell Alicia was sort of dodging her, but she didn’t take it to heart. She kept picking new topics to keep chatting with Alicia.
Alicia answered every question seriously, making Eleanor feel like she was talking to a student answering a teacher, each sentence thought through before she spoke.
Eleanor’s heart ached. She just wondered when she’d finally be able to have that easy, close relationship with her daughter. Eventually, Eleanor ran out of things to say.
After a few moments of silence, Eleanor, still searching for a topic, was interrupted by Alicia. “It’s already past eleven. Maybe we should get some rest?”
Eleanor glanced at the time. Sure enough, it was 11:10. “Alright, you’d better go to bed. You have class tomorrow, don’t you?”
“Yeah,” Alicia replied.
“Alright, you should get some sleep now. Goodnight!” Eleanor said.
“Goodnight,” Alicia replied softly.
Out of respect for her mom, Alicia waited for Eleanor to hang up first. But after a few seconds, Eleanor still hadn’t ended the call.
Finally, Alicia said, “You should get some sleep too.” With that, she was the one to hang up first.
The next day, Alicia went for her usual morning run in the park by the neighborhood. She showered, changed clothes, made some breakfast, and took it with her to school.
Just as she was getting off the subway and heading to school, she heard someone call her name. The voice was hoarse, with a stuffy sound to it, and she couldn’t immediately recognize it.
She turned around and saw Henry standing behind her, looking completely exhausted.
Alicia was taken aback. It had only been one night, but he looked awful–his face pale, eyes puffy, voice raspy, dark circles under his eyes. She was almost worried he’d come down with something overnight.
Henry stepped right up to Alicia, his gaze glued to her. “Alicia, I didn’t get a wink of sleep last night.”

Alicia shot back, “Well, if you didn’t sleep, maybe you should go catch up on some rest. Why are you bothering me?”
Henry let out a bitter laugh. “Come on, Alicia. You know why. You know I couldn’t sleep because of you.”
Alicia frowned, about to speak, when Henry suddenly grabbed her wrist. “Alicia, can we just get back together? Whatever happened with Uncle Charles, I don’t care. If you cut ties with him, I’ll act like nothing ever happened.”
Alicia was at a total loss. “First off, there’s nothing between me and Charles. Could you stop dragging Mr. Yates‘ name through the mud?
“And besides, I have zero interest in getting back together with you. Why don’t you just mind your own business and stop bothering me?” Alicia said, her tone cool and face completely unreadable.
Henry couldn’t find any softness in her eyes. ‘Is she really done with me?‘ he thought, his chest tightening.
He lifted his head, eyes red and wild. “You’re really defending him? My uncle? Are you actually into him now? Tell me why? He’s almost thirty, nearly a whole decade older than you. What is it about him? Is it just the money, the power?
–
“Because he’s the one running things in the Yates family? Alicia, what happened to you? You never used to be like this. You used to be so strong, hustling part–time jobs to earn your own cash.
“Even with the Lawrence family behind you, you’d never spend their money. What changed? Did he do something to you? Did he force you into all this?”
Alicia slapped Henry right across the face–using her other hand this time, landing it on the opposite cheek. She spoke, voice cold as ice, “Don’t you dare put your twisted ideas on Mr. Yates.
“He’s nothing like you. I don’t want to be with you–not because of anything else, but simply because you’re not good enough.”
Alicia was fuming–first at all his nasty accusations, then at the crap about her never spending the Lawrence family’s money. ‘As if! It’s not like they ever handed me any, anyway, she thought bitterly.
He acted like she was just pretending to be someone she’s not, and that really got under her skin.
Henry didn’t expect her to slap him again, and seeing her so angry made him wonder, ‘Is she really defending Charles like this now?‘
Not willing to let it go, he grabbed Alicia’s hand and tried to pull her toward his car. “Not good enough? I’m the one set to inherit everything from the Yates family.
“Why wouldn’t I be good enough for you? Tonight, I’ll prove it. Let’s see who’s really worthy.”
Alicia tried to break free, but Henry’s grip was too strong. He was dragging her toward the car, practically using all his strength. She couldn’t get loose, so she shouted for help, hoping someone would step in.
But it was rush hour, and everyone was too busy heading to work to notice. Only a group of retirees doing their morning exercises stopped to watch, muttering, “Kids these days, thinking they’re putting on a soap

Alicia shook her head.
“Then hurry and get to class, Charles said softly, not wanting Alicia to say there and let everyone keep staring.
Alicia felt a lump rise in her throat, but she nodded and hurried off.
As Alicia ran, she couldn’t help thinking. Now that Tiffany isn’t clinging to Henry all the time, he’s been chasing after me nonstop. It’s just so annoying
