Patricia panicked when she saw Cameron wasn’t even trying to comfort her. She quickly ripped off her face mask and ran after him. “Where are you going?”
“I’m going to the family house,” Cameron replied.
“I said I don’t want to go, and you’re still leaving?” Patricia’s heart sank.
“If you don’t want to go, that’s fine. But I have to,” Cameron said, turning to leave.
Patricia burst into tears. “Cameron, are you really just walking out on me like this?”
“What do you want me to do?” Cameron asked, his voice still calm but with a cold undertone that Patricia immediately picked up on.
‘Is he really giving me the cold shoulder just because I made a few comments about Charles and Charles’s mother?‘ Patricia thought to herself, feeling wounded.
She exploded in frustration. “Cameron, I’ve been your wife for over twenty years, and our son is already in his twenties. But even now, you treat your brother and your stepmother like they’re your real family.
“Why? We should be the ones closest to you. Why are you treating me and our son like this?”
Cameron gave her an indifferent look. “Calm down. I’m heading to the family house now.” With that, he left.
Patricia stared after him, feeling completely abandoned. No matter how much she cried or how upset she got. Cameron didn’t show a hint of warmth. His coldness cut deeper than any words could.
Fuming, Patricia grabbed the coffee set from the coffee table and smashed it to the floor, glass shards flying and one piece cutting into her arm.
The housekeeper heard the crash and quickly rushed out. When she saw Patricia bleeding, she gasped and ran for the first aid kit. “Oh dear, what happened?
“Did you have another argument with Mr. Yates? You need to talk things through, not fight. The more you argue, the less love there will be in the end,” the housekeeper said.
With tear–stained cheeks, Patricia clung to her, her voice choked. “Joanne, why is he doing this to me? Henry and I should be his closest family, so why does he always turn his back on us for someone else?”
Joanne Benton gently patted her back. “Men are always closest to the people they grew up with. For them, a wife is someone who entered their life later on. Marriage takes effort.
“If you want him on your side, you gotta show him you really mean it, that you’re truly a team. Let him see that those others don’t really treat him like family–then he’ll realize it’s you and Henry who are his real
home.”
Patricia, in her late forties and after years of marriage, finally understood what Joanne meant. She nodded slowly. “I understand.”

Joanne gently wiped away her tears. “Go on, hurry up and get ready. There’s a family dinner at the family house tonight. If you don’t show up, Mr. Yates will feel embarrassed, and he might just hold it against you
even more.”
Patricia nodded and quickly freshened up. She asked the driver to take her to the family house.
When Patricia arrived, the family was gathered in the living room. She was surprised to see Henry there, and as soon as she looked at him, she noticed his face was swollen again.
‘What is going on with Henry these days? Why does my son keep getting hit?‘ Patricia thought angrily. Alicia was the one who slapped him yesterday, but who did it today?‘
She didn’t realize that both slaps, from yesterday and today, had been from Alicia.
Looking at Henry sitting there quietly, stealing cautious glances at Charles, Patricia assumed it was Charles who had slapped him. Her anger toward him grew, and she found herself resenting Charles more and more.
However, remembering Joanne’s words, she forced herself to calm down. She walked in with a polite smile, apologizing to Samuel and Charles. “Sorry I’m late. Something came up and held me back.”
“Didn’t Cameron say you went back to your parents‘ place and couldn’t make it? How come you’re back so soon? Shouldn’t you be spending more time with them?” Samuel asked.
Patricia glanced at Cameron, who was calmly sipping his coffee, looking completely unfazed, as if nothing had happened.
She felt a small sense of relief–Cameron had covered for her, not mentioning their fight and coming up with a reasonable excuse.
She gave a light laugh. “Yeah, I did go to my parents‘ place, but Cameron called and said the family dinner got moved up to today, so I rushed back. Charles doesn’t come home often, so I had to be here. I’ll visit my parents next time.”
Though she had her issues with Charles, Patricia would never act out in front of him. Since Cameron had saved face for her, she had to do the same for their family–no drama in front of everyone.
In a cool voice, Charles said, “I was the one who changed the time so suddenly. That was on me.”
“It’s really no big deal,” Patricia replied as she slung her bag over her shoulder and shot a quick glance toward the kitchen. Samantha was there, instructing the staff and even helping out herself.
Even though Samantha was Samuel’s third wife and not much older than Patricia, she was still her mother–in- law. There was no way Patricia could just sit around while her mother–in–law was busy in the kitchen.
So she rolled up her sleeves and said, “Samuel, you all keep chatting. I’ll head into the kitchen and see if I can help out.”
Samuel nodded, and Patricia headed into the kitchen.
Samuel let out a relieved sigh. “Cameron really lucked out with his wife. They’re doing well together, and that puts my mind at ease.”
