The recording went well, but as soon as I wrapped, I drove back to grab it.
The driveway was empty, garage doors closed. I let myself in, and that’s when I saw a man walking out of the front door.
Tall Dark jacket. Baseball cap low over his face. His eyes met mine for half a second before he brushed past me without a word.
When I stepped inside, Cassie was in the living room. Surprise flickered across her face for a heartbeat before she smoothed it away.
“Who just left?” I asked.
She didn’t miss a beat. “My brother.‘
I tilted my head. “Your brother? The one from the family you said isn’t in the States?”
Her lips tightened. “He just came for a quick meeting.”
“Does Liam know about this brother of yours?”
Her tone sharpened. “What is this, an interrogation? Am I not allowed to have guests?”
“You’re free to do whatever you want,” I said evenly. “But Liam would want to know who’s coming and going from his house. Don’t you think so?”
Her smile thinned. “So what, you’re going to tell him?”
“Of course.

“Go ahead,” she said, leaning back. “I’ll deny every word. Watch me.”
I studied her for a long moment, the corner of my mouth lifting, not from amusement, but from pity. “I almost feel sorry for you. Living like this, lying, scheming, plotting… it must be exhausting.”
I let the quiet stretch until she shifted in her seat.
“What are you hiding, Cassie?”

She stiffened but said. “Mind your business.
I leaned in slightly, my voice low. “That man who just left… is he the baby’s real father?”

Cassie’s answer was a shrug, the kind of slow, lazy movement meant to say you’re beneath my
energy.
“Think whatever you want,” she said, eyes fixed on her phone.
I didn’t waste a single word on her. My silence was the sharpest reply I could give. I took my phone from the counter, fingers curling around it like I was holding back more than just anger, and walked out. The need to get space from her was louder than the need to win.
Back in the studio, I buried myself in edits, schedules, tomorrow’s prep, anything that could keep my brain from looping.
It didn’t work.
Who was the man walking out of the house?
What was Cassie’s angle this time?
And the real question- if I told Liam, would it matter?
By the time I shut down for the night, I had exactly zero answers and a headache big enough to warrant a week in bed. Instead, I drove to the one place that still made me feel like the world
wasn’t made of smoke and mirrors.
My Mom opened the door and immediately wrapped me into her arms.
“Oh, it’s like you knew I was missing you deeply, my baby,” she said into my hair.
“I missed you more,” I murmured.
She drew back to look at me, brushing my cheek with her thumb. “I was about to watch a new episode. Now you’re here, it’s going to be even better.
”
We settled in, the glow from the TV spilling over us. Halfway through, the words I’d been holding back all day just… came out. The stranger. Cassie’s brush–off. My hesitation.
“If I tell Liam, she’ll just deny it.”
