Chapter 121

Liam’s voice was low but sharp enough to slice through the quiet. His gaze pinned me, searching my face like he was making sure I wasn’t about to tell him a bad dream.

I told him everything. The man outside. Cassie’s brushoff. How fast it all happened.

Can you remember his face?

I shook my head. Not really. He had a cap pulled low. It was over in seconds.

That’s fine. His voice dropped, almost quiet. If you remember anything, anything at all, or if you see him again, you tell me. I don’t care if it’s three in the morning.

His jaw clenched as he rubbed the back of his neck, locking something down. Every camera on this property goes back online tonight. Not a single blind spot.

We didn’t speak about it again that night.

By morning, Cassie was already in the living room, dressed like she had a runway call time, not a prenatal checkup.

When she saw me come down beside Liam, her smile thinned, the kind people wear when they’d

rather bare their teeth.

Why is she coming with us?she asked him.

Liam walked right past her without so much as a glance. If you really want to make it to your appointment, Cassie, meet us outside.

I let my lips curl into the kind of smile that promised trouble. You really thought I’d leave you alone with my man? Not happening.

Cassie’s reply was a cool, tightlipped smile of her own. Enjoy it while

you can.

The hospital visit was handled with care. We arrived in separate cars, separate entrances.

Liam’s name carried enough weight that we skipped the waiting area entirely and went straight to the private wing.

Inside the dim sean room, the doctor prepped the machine, the cool gel slick against Cassie’s skin. I stayed beside Liam, my hand hooked through his arm, feeling the tension vibrating under his jacket.

It was written all over him- jaw tight, shoulders locked, eyes fixed anywhere but the screen.

This wasn’t just discomfort for him, it was torture. He’d rather be stuck in traffic, sitting through a board meeting, hell, even trapped at an amusement park on the hottest day of summer than be here.

The doctor adjusted the probe, his eyes on the screen. There are two gestational sacs,he said finally. You’re carrying twins.

Cassie’s head snapped toward Liam, her voice bright with triumph. Did you hear that? Twins, Liam.

He didn’t even glance at her. His gaze was fixed on me.

I caught the flicker on Cassie’s face, her smile faltering, gaze tightening like she’d just swallowed a mouthful of vinegar.

I wish it was us,” I whispered before I could stop myself.

It will be,he murmured, his hand finding the back of my neck, pulling me onto his shoulder.

Cassie shifted on the bed, the rustle of paper under her an unspoken protest, but in that moment, the rest of the room faded.

The doctor gave his list of instructions. No heavy lifting, watch your diet, followup in four weeks, then dismiss us.

Cassie slid off the exam table, smoothing her dress. Guess I’ll need someone strong around to help mesomeone committed. Her eyes lingered on Liam before flicking to me with a sugary smile.

We left the same way we came, with Liam going first and Cassie and I hanging back to avoid

attention.

She was scrolling through her phone when it buzzed with a new message. My eyes caught it before my brain told me not to look.
