Chapter 128
“Your staff might walk in and find you like this.”
“Trust me. No one walks in here without permission.”
I fed him lunch one spoon at a time, grinning like an idiot every time he moaned in appreciation.
In between bites, he brushed crumbs from my lips. I kissed his knuckles.
“By the way,” he said, wiping his mouth with a napkin. “Let’s get out of here. Just us. One full week.”
My eyes widened. “Seriously?”
“I’m overdue for time off. And you deserve the world.”
“Where?”
“Anywhere. You pick.”
“Paris?”
“If that’s what you want.
“Or maybe Morocco.”
He nodded. “Done.”
“Or Tokyo?”
”
He chuckled. “Then I’ll start looking.”
We were mid–debate between Santorini and the Amalfi Coast when a knock came at the door.
Then his secretary stepped in.
“Mr. Black, I’m sorry to interrupt. But… Cassie Scott is here. She’s refusing to leave. Says it’s urgent.”
Liam stiffened.

His hand found mine beneath the table. “Do you want me to send her away?”
I shook my head, lips tight. “Let her in.”
Seconds later, the door swung open, and she stepped inside.

Hair perfect. Lipstick bold. Eyes gleaming with a kind of pleasure that didn’t belong in a room like this.
“Oh, good,” Cassie said, smiling at me. “You’re here. You might want to hear what I’m about to say.”
Liam’s jaw tightened. “Say it and leave.”
Cassie tilted her head.
“No need for formalities,” she said coolly. “I’ll get straight to the point, then.”
Her hand slid to her stomach.
“Congratulations, Liam. You’re going to be a father.

”
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
Not because I believed her.
Not even because I didn’t.
But because those words hit the one place I’d spent weeks trying to stop bleeding.
Liam’s hand stayed wrapped around mine under the table, firm like he was anchoring me to the ground, holding me steady.
But I didn’t look at him.
My eyes were locked on her.
Cassie–poised, serpent–smiling, one manicured hand resting on her stomach like she was cradling power, not life.
“You’re lying,” Liam said, his voice cold and flat. “And the only thing more pathetic than this stunt is thinking I’d fall for it.”
Cassie arched her brow. “Are you sure about that?”

“You think I wouldn’t know if I touched you?”

“You were too drunk to remember anything. Now,” she smiled wider, “there’s a piece of you growing inside me, and it’s not going away.”
My throat burned, but I kept my voice steady. “Do you have proof?”
She blinked, surprised I was the one who asked.
“Would you like a copy of the ultrasound? I could get one printed by tomorrow,” she said with a mocking tilt of her head. “Eight weeks.‘
”
Liam’s jaw clenched. “And you think that proves it’s mine?”
Cassie’s smile thinned. “I haven’t been with anyone else since
Liam. And you,
you know that.”
“No,” he snapped. “I don’t. Because I don’t know anything about you anymore.”
The room felt colder. My heart wasn’t racing, it was slow and heavy, like it had fallen into deep
water.
I stood up.
Both of them looked at me.
“I need to speak to Liam. Alone,” I said, keeping my voice calm.
Cassie crossed her arms. “I think we’re all involved here, don’t you?”
Liam stood too. “Cassie. Get out.”
She rolled her eyes but turned, heels tapping their smug rhythm across the floor. At the door, she paused.
“Oh, and Liam? Check your voicemail. You wouldn’t want to miss the rest of the story.”
The door clicked shut behind her.
