His Private Chef (by Amycee) novel Chapter 134

Go ahead, she said, leaning back. I’ll deny every word. Watch me.

I studied her for a long moment, the corner of my mouth lifting, not from amusement, but from pity. I almost feel sorry for you. Living like this, lying, scheming, plottingit must be exhausting.

I let the quiet stretch until she shifted in her seat.

What are you hiding, Cassie?

She stiffened but said, Mind

your

business.

I leaned in slightly, my voice low. That man who just leftis he the baby’s real father?

Cassie’s answer was a shrug, the kind of slow, lazy movement meant to say you’re beneath my

energy.

Think whatever you want, she said, eyes fixed on her phone.

I didn’t waste a single word on her. My silence was the sharpest reply I could give. I took my phone from the counter, fingers curling around it like I was holding back more than just anger, and walked out. The need to get space from her was louder than the need to win.

Back in the studio, I buried myself in edits, schedules, tomorrow’s prep, anything that could keep my brain from looping.

It didn’t work.

Who was the man walking out of the house?

What was Cassie’s angle this time?

And the real question- if I told Liam, would it matter?

By the time I shut down for the night, I had exactly zero answers and a headache big enough to warrant a week in bed. Instead, I drove to the one place that still made me feel like the world wasn’t made of smoke and mirrors.

Chapter 134

:

My Mom opened the door and immediately wrapped me into her arms.

Oh, it’s like you knew I was missing you deeply, my baby, she said into my hair.

I missed you more,I murmured.

She drew back to look at me, brushing my check with her thumb. I was about to watch a new episode. Now you’re here, it’s going to be even better.

We settled in, the glow from the TV spilling over us. Halfway through, the words I’d been holding back all day justcame out. The stranger. Cassie’s brushoff. My hesitation.

If I tell Liam, she’ll just deny it.

Mom paused the show, turning to me with that look that makes you feel seen and called out all at

once.

Between you and Cassie, who do you think Liam would believe?

Me,I said without even thinking.

Exactly. And that man, I’ve watched him, Emily. He’d burn the world before he let anyone hurt you. Trust your instincts. Cassie’s games will end. They always do. You can predict how a game starts, but never how it endsand that’s when people like her lose.

Her words stayed with me all the way back to Liam’s.

The driveway was blissfully empty, no Cassie lurking like a bad subplot. A small, satisfying win in a week that hadn’t given me many.

I barely had time to drop my bag before my phone buzzed.

Liam: Running late tonight. Finishing something up at the office. Don’t wait up.

Fine by me. I went to bed and didn’t wake until sunlight stretched across the sheets.

Morning light lay warm and heavy, and Liam’s arm was draped over my waist. He was already awake, watching me like I was his morning and his excuse for being late.
