His Private Chef (by Amycee) novel Chapter 138

Chapter 138

The next few days felt almost unnervingly peaceful. No jabs from Cassie. No lingering stares. It was tempting to believe she’d finally given up, except I knew better. She was letting Liam’s temper cool.

Her truce broke on a Thursday morning.

I need to buy some things for the babies,” she said over breakfast, her tone overly sweet. Emily should come with me. She’s a woman. Better choices and all.

I knew it wasn’t an invitation. It was bait. But I told Liam it was fine, and went.

The store was all soft pastels and tiny clothes. Cassie cooed over every item.

Oh, this little romper is adorable, she gushed. I don’t even know their gender yet. Emily, which would you want first? A boy or a girl? Ohsorry. Forget, I asked.

I just smiled and rolled my eyes, refusing to give her the reaction she wanted.

Halfway through, my phone beeped. Sophia had sent a picture of Jay’s living room, now transformed into a karaoke setup. Captioned:

Jay ditched me for studio sessions. Come overrr.

A smile tugged at my lips. Only Sophia would turn a Thursday afternoon into a fullblown concert. I could practically hear her laugh through the text.

I looked at Cassie. Something came up. Finish without me.

Her eyes narrowed, but I was already walking away.

By the time I reached Jay’s, Sophia had a playlist queued and shot me a wicked grin. This one’s for Cassie.

The speakers blasted a string of profanitylaced breakup anthems, and we sang them at the top of our lungs until my cheeks hurt from laughing.

Somewhere in the haze, I must’ve dozed off.

The next thing I knew, I was being set down onto a familiar mattress.

My lashes fluttered open to a blur of warm light and Liam’s face.

A slow, knowing smile curved his mouth.

Heywhat happened?I mumbled, still trying to piece together how I’d gone from Jay’s couch to his bed.

I came back and you weren’t home,he said. “So I called you, Sophia answered. She told me you were asleep at Jay’s.

I don’t knowlately I get worn out so fast, it’s ridiculous.

That glint appeared in his eyes, the one that meant he was up to something.

What?I asked.

Remember that getaway we planned before the whole Cassie mess?he asked.

Yeah,” I said, curious where he was going with this.

His lips curved. It’s still on. But firstI’m taking you away for the weekend. Little Palm Island Resort.

My eyes widened, a smile tugging at my lips. That’s amazing, the thought of sun and ocean already warming my chest. But then reality caught up.

Waitwhat about Cassie?

We don’t tell her. We just leave.

Bad idea,I said immediately. She’ll be furious and might pull something.

I don’t care. His voice softened. You need a break from this madness.

I thought for a moment. Okay. But let’s be smart. You won’t sleep here the night before. Sophia stays over. We would make sure Cassie overhears Sophia inviting me to Jay’s house because youre out of town. Then you pick me up from there, and we go. No suspicion.

He stared at me for a long moment before smiling. Living with Cassie hasn’t made you start playing her games, has it?

She’s the only one playing.I said, grinning. I already won.

Sophia sat crosslegged on the bed, tossing a sundress onto the suitcase I’d been packing for the last hour

I still don’t see why you’re hiding this from Cassie, she said, arms crossing as that familiar don’t- messwithme look took over her face. Let her do her worst.

I zipped one compartment closed, half smiling. Soph, relax. This trip is about me and Liam, not Cassic.

Her brows drew together. That doesn’t mean she gets to think she’s got the upper hand.
