Cassie lay collapsed on the floor, her body twisted, her hands clamped over her stomach. Blood spread in a dark pool beneath her, stark against the floor. Each breath she drew was ragged and
thin.
Her eyes flicked up to me, wide and drowning in terror. They pleaded without words, begging for mercy, for life, for anything I might give.
My pulse thundered in my ears.
For one frozen moment, I couldn’t move.
Because Cassie, the woman who wanted me dead, was bleeding out on my studio floor.
Was this real? Or just another trap, another game she’d laid to pull me under?
I stood rooted to the spot, staring at Cassie crumpled across the studio floor, blood spreading dark beneath her. My pulse thundered in my ears as my mind split in two.
The first instinct was to run. To flee. Because this could be a trap, when it came to Cassie, anything was possible. Every nerve in my body screamed don’t move.
But another thought cut through the panic.
What if it wasn’t a trick?
What if she was truly dying, and I walked away? Could I live with that? Could I ever forgive myself for letting another woman, and her unborn children, bleed out in front of me, even if that woman was my enemy?
Her head shifted, lips trembling, and then her voice came, faint, broken.
“Emily… please. Help me.
The humanity in me won out. I dropped to my knees, the blood cold against my skin as I grabbed her hand. The smell of iron filled the room, the reality overwhelming, this wasn’t staged.
I dialed emergency services with shaking fingers. My free hand pressed hers tighter. “Hold on. Help is coming.”
Cassie laughed then, low and rasping, a sound so out of place it chilled me.

Her lips curved faintly. “Crazy world, huh? I came here to poison you… and look at you. Saving me.”
“Don’t talk,” I snapped, wiping my eyes with the back of my wrist. “We can continue our war later. Just stay alive.”
Her gaze softened. “You’re better than me, Emily. I see it now. No wonder Liam can’t let you go. You’re… different. Not rotten like me.”
I shook my head, panic rising. “Cassie, please stop talking. Save your strength.”
She ignored me. “That’s the truth. I’d never have lifted a finger if it were the other way around. Her fingers clutched mine, nails digging weakly into my skin. “I’m sorry. For all of it.”
I swallowed hard, my voice breaking. “I forgive you.”
Her chest heaved once, twice. “Promise me something.”
“What?”
“If my babies survive, and I don’t… keep them safe. Please, Emily. Don’t let them end up like me.
My throat closed. “Okay. But tell me, who’s their father? He should know.”
Cassie’s eyelids fluttered, her breaths jagged. “It’s not Liam.”
“I know that. Then who?”
She tried to speak, her lips forming shapes, breath hitching. “My room…”
Her eyes rolled back. Her body went slack just as sirens wailed outside.
me.”
Paramedics rushed her into a stretcher, blood smeared across my clothes. I sat in the back, clutching the rail as her heart monitor beeped unevenly. On the way, my shaking hands managed one call to Liam. I barely got the words out, Cassie, blood, hospital, before my voice broke.
By the time we arrived, he was already waiting, his face carved in fury and worry.
Two officers arrived soon after, their clipped questions beginning before I’d even had time to catch my breath.
