But the mention of pregnancy struck me, reminding me of the innocent lives caught in all this. ‘What about her babies?‘ I whispered.”
Sophia shook her head. “I don’t know. Liam might, but…” She trailed off, knowing he wasn’t answering my calls.
At the Blacks‘ residence, Laura pulled me into a hug, her warmth steady even as her eyes darted anxiously to my stomach.
Henry, however, wasn’t soft. He cut straight in, his voice sharp. “Sophia. Explain.”
She did. She laid it all out for him- the false pregnancy claim, the manipulation, the mind games. She told him about Cassie’s schemes, about how it escalated to poison, to collapse, to blood on the floor. From start to finish, she gave him the truth.
Henry’s expression hardened. “So if she hadn’t collapsed, she would’ve succeeded in poisoning Emily and my grandchild?”
Silence stretched. Sophia said nothing, because the truth was too heavy.
“Unacceptable. Liam should have protected Emily better.” He pulled out his phone and called his
son.
To my shock, Liam picked up on the first ring. The man who had ignored me answered his father without hesitation.
Henry stormed into another room, his voice raised. When he returned, the fire in his tone had cooled, but his jaw was still hard. “Don’t worry, Emily. This will be cleared up. Soon.”
Laura stayed beside me, clasping my hand, glancing between me and my belly like she wasn’t sure which of us she feared more for.
We stayed at the Blacks‘ house until nightfall. Henry eventually allowed me to leave, though I suspected it was Liam’s influence behind the decision.

When we got home, he still wasn’t there. I showered, dressed for bed, and tucked myself beneath
the covers.
Minutes later, the door opened and Liam walked in. He showered, changed, and settled into bed beside me.
I kept my eyes closed, unsure if I could face him. Then his voice came, low. “I’m sorry.”
I turned toward him, blinking back tears. “We promised, Liam. No running. And you broke it.
”
His arms closed around me, his face burying in my hair. “I was angry. At you, at myself. I needed to cool off. But I shouldn’t have left. I’m sorry.”
I exhaled shakily. “And I’m sorry for being careless. For keeping things from you. I don’t see you as a control freak. I know you only want me safe.”
He kissed the crown of my head. “Then don’t ever hide anything from me again.”
“I won’t, I promise.”
The silence stretched until I finally voiced the question that had haunted me all day. “What really happened to Cassie?”
His chest rose and fell. “She didn’t make it. Neither did the babies. But before she went under, she gave a statement to the officers. She said you saved her, that you were innocent. For once in her life, she did the right thing.”
Tears stung my eyes, but not from grief. From confusion. Cassie’s death left me with nothing but a tangle of guilt, relief, and unanswered questions.
I hesitated, then said quietly, “I found her diary. In the room she was staying in.”
His arms stiffened around me. “It’s time to clear out every trace of her from this house.”
“There’s something else.” My heart pounded. “She wrote about the babies‘ father. The real one.”
His eyes searched mine. “Who was it?”
I swallowed hard. “Leo Black. Your cousin. Kelvin’s brother.”
Liam stilled. His expression darkened, the weight of calculation flickering in his eyes. And then, without another word, he pushed away from the bed and stood, every line of his body set with a grim purpose that told me whatever came next would not be simple.
Liam left the bedroom without another word, and I sat in the dim light, waiting for him to return
