Chapter 178
The days that followed carried a lighthearted rhythm, edged with enough sharpness to blur the weight of Kelvin’s confession. Mason had set our plan in motion. His single with a female artist was about to drop, and speculation about the two of them ran wild.
Sophia didn’t find it funny.
She sulked. She cursed. She stomped through the house, her phone gripped like a weapon. Meanwhile, Mason kept texting me updates: She’s furious. I’m tempted to tell her the truth.
I’d reply: Don’t you dare. Hold steady. This will work.
At breakfast one morning, Sophia scrolled furiously through her feed, muttering curses under her breath. Liam leaned over to kiss me goodbye before work, whispering in my ear, “When she finds out you’re behind this, don’t expect to escape.”
I burst into laughter. Sophia shot us both a glare before huffing at her phone again, which only made me laugh harder.
When Liam left, I leaned across the table. “So? What’s Mason saying about all this?”
She dropped her phone with a groan. “Can you imagine? He says he’s still single to the public and this kind of thing is bound to happen. What nonsense.”
I shrugged. “Well, he’s not wrong. He is dating you, but unless you make it public, the world will keep guessing.”
Her eyes narrowed. “That’s exactly what he said.”
“Then maybe two people can’t be wrong at the same time.”
Sophia sat in silence for a beat, then grabbed her phone again. I held my breath, silently praying.

replying with heart emojis and a line of words that made it clear. Even the blind could see now that they were a couple
Triumph bloomed inside me. I rose from my chair, grinning. “Tell your man he owes me.
Her head shot up. “Why?”
“He’ll understand.”
Recognition dawned in her eyes, her jaw dropping. “You didn’t, Emily.”
“Oh, I did.”
Her chair scraped as she jumped up. “You’ve got two minutes to run.
”
I hurried off, laughing. “Remember, Sophia, I’m pregnant. You can’t chase a pregnant woman!”
“Not when it’s a sly one!” she shouted, chasing me down the hall.
The moment I stepped into our room, I locked the door behind me. From the other side, Sophia’s voice rang out, equal parts threat and laughter.
“You’d better stay in there, Emily! If I catch you, it’s over for you.”
I placed a hand to my stomach, laughing softly as I leaned against the door. “You’re supposed to thank me, not hunt me down. I just did you the biggest favor of your life!”
Her response was a scoff. “Open the door and say that to my face.”
“Not a chance,” I shot back, grinning.
The truth was, Sophia wouldn’t actually do anything to me if I stepped outside, but there was a thrill in hiding from her, like we were locked in a private game only we understood. I spent most of the day tucked away, reading, napping, and smiling to myself every time I heard her footsteps linger by my door.
By evening, Liam’s knock pulled me from a call with my mom. I quickly said goodbye and walked
to the door.
