To her surprise, it was Nancy who’d been sent to keep an eye on her.
That was just like him—suspicious to the core, never trusting anyone at face value.
Still, Lumina Jardin kept her thoughts well hidden, letting her lips curve into a gentle smile. “I know he means well.”
As Nancy tidied up the fridge, she asked, “What would you like for dinner tonight? I can cook for you. How about your favorite chicken bites?”
Lumina smiled, meeting her gaze. “Nancy, I’ve got dinner plans with a friend tonight, so I’ll be out.”
Nancy paused, finally turning toward her. “Oh? That’s a shame. The moment I show up, you’re heading out for dinner?”
Lumina gave a soft laugh. “Really is bad timing, isn’t it? I’ve been cooped up at the Royce family estate for so long without a phone—haven’t seen my friends in ages.”
Nancy seemed convinced, nodding. “Want me to have Mr. Royce’s driver pick you up later?”
“No need, my friend has a car.” With that, Lumina slipped into her bedroom to start getting ready—curling her hair and doing her makeup.
Tonight, she chose a deep navy dress. The rich color made her fair skin seem almost luminous, adding a sense of poise and understated elegance. She’d put real thought into her look.
After all, Soren Royce was even older than Cedric by three years—nearly forty now. Anything too flashy would have felt out of place beside him.
From her jewelry box, Lumina selected a string of pearls for her neck, then glided out the door.
She caught a cab to Ashley’s apartment; within minutes, Soren’s car pulled up.
Soren’s gaze lingered on her dress, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly. His fingers tapped the steering wheel as he said, “You look beautiful in blue.”
A charming smile played at Lumina’s lips. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, exposing the graceful line of her neck and shoulder.
They pulled up to a chic rooftop restaurant.
Just as Lumina reached for the door, Soren stopped her. “Wait.”
