“Go ahead.”
Harriet reached into her crocodile handbag and tossed a document onto the table in front of her, the paper landing with a careless flutter.
Lumina picked it up and glanced at it. It was a prenatal report. Her own name was printed at the top. Even the doctor’s signature matched perfectly with the one who had written her original file.
Lumina’s lips froze for a split second, but she kept her face composed and pleasant.
Harriet’s gaze was fixed on her, sharp and unyielding, as if she could see straight through her. “Is Cedric the father?”
Lumina knew there was no way to hide it anymore. The veins on the back of her pale hand stood out faintly, and if one looked closely, her shoulders were trembling ever so slightly.
She forced a faint smile. “What made you decide to look into this?”
“Just answer me.” Harriet’s voice suddenly rose, harsher than before.
“He is.”
The word had barely left Lumina’s lips when Harriet slapped her hard across the face.
Lumina’s head jerked to the side. First came a numbing shock, quickly overtaken by a deep, stinging pain. She reached up and gently touched her left cheek—it was already beginning to swell.
“Impressive.”
Harriet sneered, her eyes cold and contemptuous. “You’re even more ruthless than I imagined.”
Lumina drew a slow, steadying breath and looked up at Harriet, her gaze calm but brimming with restraint. “If you’ll allow me to keep this child, I promise he’ll never set foot in the Royce family.”
“Oh, you promise? And what’s your promise worth?” Harriet scoffed, her disbelief biting. “You got yourself pregnant just to force Cedric to marry you, isn’t that right?”
Lumina hesitated, her eyes trembling with emotion, but her voice was steady and unwavering. “The Royce family, the company, Cedric—none of that is what I want. Believe me or not, all I want is this baby. I just want a quiet life for the two of us.”
“You found out which hospital I went to, so I’m sure you also know I resigned from Royce Group a while ago. If that’s not proof of my intentions, I don’t know what is.”
Harriet was breathing heavily, her chest rising and falling as she tried to process the enormity of what Lumina was saying.
“And besides,” Lumina went on, “if I really wanted to use this child to get everything you’re afraid of, I would have told Cedric the moment I found out I was pregnant, forced him to marry me on the spot. Why would I keep it a secret until now?”
Her fingers curled protectively over her stomach as she exhaled shakily. “You’re a mother, too. Please, try to understand where I’m coming from. I just want this child to grow up safe and healthy, away from all the wealth and power. That’s all I ask.”
