Lumina was helped onto the couch. She eyed the woman before her, taking in that sincere, harmless face with cold detachment, the corners of her mouth twisting into a mocking smile.
Without warning, she raised her hand and slapped the ointment right out of Nancy’s grasp.
Nancy froze in shock, needing a long moment to recover before stammering, terrified, “Ms. Jardin… Did I do something wrong? Have I upset you somehow?”
Lumina’s smile was bitter. “I always thought you were working for Cedric. Turns out, you’re actually Harriet’s. You really hid it well.”
She already knew—the only way Harriet could have suddenly dug up her medical records from the hospital was if someone tipped her off.
There was no question who that someone was.
“Ms. Jardin, I don’t understand what you’re talking about!” Nancy’s voice trembled as she shook her head, looking desperately at Lumina.
Once, Lumina had believed she’d found a touch of home with Nancy—a hint of warmth, the kindness of a maternal figure.
Now she realized it had all been a lie.
It was all just a calculated act, a way to get close and win her trust.
One betrayal after another. There was never anyone truly on her side.
Lumina didn’t want to say another word. She turned her head away, shoulders trembling. “Just go. I don’t ever want to see you again.”
“Ms. Jardin…”
“Get out!” Lumina exploded, unable to hold back her anger.
She stood up, stuffed all of Nancy’s things haphazardly into her suitcase, yanked the zipper shut, and flung the case out the door.
Nancy’s eyes filled with tears in an instant, her cheeks flushed, but she knew no explanation would make a difference now.
Stooping, she stood in the entryway and managed a slight bow. “Ms. Jardin, I’m sorry. I had no choice. Harriet has my grandson—my whole family, and I have to take care of all of them…”
Lumina didn’t want to hear it. She shoved Nancy out, slammed the door with a resounding bang, and slid down against it to the floor.
She pressed her hands to her face and broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.
