A moment later, two or three sets of footsteps approached from the hallway.
Two were deep, mature male voices, accompanied by the gentle tones of an older woman.
Lumina immediately recognized the elderly woman as Cedric’s grandmother, Seraphina.
Cedric had brought Lumina home twice before, and Seraphina had taken quite a liking to her. Every visit, she would insist on pressing a little cash into Lumina’s hand, urging her to sit and play cards together. If Lumina lost, Seraphina refused to take her money, and if she won, she doubled the prize. Seraphina was always nudging Cedric and Lumina to hurry up with a wedding and give her a chubby great-grandson as soon as possible.
Apart from her relentless hints about having children, Lumina thought of the old lady as a loving, approachable, and rather well-off grandmother.
Cedric led Seraphina to the sofa. “Would you like your usual coffee?”
Under the coffee table, Lumina clamped a hand over her mouth, barely daring to breathe. The table where she hid was directly across from the sofa. Any small movement and she’d be discovered.
Meanwhile, the plump little tabby cat sitting across from her was as relaxed as ever—lazily scratching its ear, half-closing its eyes, clearly amused by Lumina’s predicament.
“That’ll be perfect,” Seraphina replied serenely.
Cedric nodded and turned to the man beside her. “What about you, brother? Tea or coffee?”
The man was dressed in a casual riding outfit: a deep brown vest accentuating his broad shoulders, a pale beige shirt underneath with a few buttons undone, showing a glimpse of sun-kissed skin at his neck.
Brother?
Lumina blinked in surprise. She’d often heard people mention Cedric’s older brother, but she only knew he’d spent years abroad and rarely showed up in public.
