Winona’s face drained of color as she bowed her head in shock.
The sound of something shattering inside the room startled the Royce family’s bodyguards. They rushed in at once. “Mr. Royce, are you alright?”
Cedric sat upright at the head of the bed, his expression dark with anger, while Winona looked on the verge of tears, as if she’d made an unforgivable mistake.
Cedric’s cold gaze swept over the intruders. His voice was icy. “Who gave you permission to come in?”
His tone was sharp as a winter frost. The bodyguards immediately apologized, bowing their heads as they hurried out.
Once the door was closed again, Winona’s voice trembled as she spoke. “It… it was Alistair. He went to Ansel’s school and took him away. He forced me to tell him where you were. I… I had no choice. I had to tell him…”
Cedric closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them, all emotion had vanished from his gaze. “That’s enough. You can go. I don’t need anyone looking after me right now.”
“Cedric, please don’t be angry.” Winona stepped to his bedside, picking up the shards of broken glass one by one. “I know, all of this is my fault, but I can’t lose Ansel…”
Her voice broke as she spoke, and suddenly she let out a sharp cry of pain.
Cedric glanced over to see blood welling up from her fingertip.
Still, she stubbornly bit her lip, refusing to let the tears fall, standing there with a wounded, pitiful look.
“Leave it,” Cedric sighed. “Go see a doctor and get that bandaged.”
“Cedric, do you still blame me?” Winona’s eyes were red. “If you’re still angry, take it out on me. I’ll stand right here until you feel better.”
Cedric looked at her for a moment, but any anger he’d felt had faded. He waved her away. “Go on now.”
Winona answered softly and finally left the room.
Cedric leaned back against the pillows and pulled out his phone. Aside from a flurry of work messages and his brothers chatting away in their group text, there was nothing from the one person he actually wanted to hear from.
Heartless girl!
After a moment’s thought, he dialed her number. It rang for a long time before someone picked up. “Hello?”
