Barry didn't want to reveal the entire truth. “I made a call to someone I knew.”
He made it sounded so simple. As if he just pressed a few buttons.
“Bullshit!” Kane Nightingale bawled angrily at him. “There's no way you could have pulled that off. Not only was the hospital bought out, but the government also forbade us from proceeding with the surgery. How did you pull it off?”
Barry dug his hands in his pockets and gazed down at Kane. “What's this? I thought we had a deal? If I'm able to prevent the surgery, my sister leaves. That was the deal, or are you backing out on your words?”
“You bastard!” Reeves yelled at Barry. “You had better start talking, or I'll rip you apart right here.”
Barry frowned. “You can't do anything to me, Reeves. We had a deal and that's that. I won't disclose how I pull it off. I owe no one any explanation.”
Barry approached the doctor in charge of the surgery and placed both hands on the desk. “About my sister, doctor. Where is she?”
The doctor cleared his throat. He had been visibly shaken by Barry's capabilities to buy this hospital and work miracles this night.
“The hospital management has contacted me,” he answered reassuringly to Barry. “Your sister would be released to you immediately.”
“That's all I want to hear,” Barry said. “Take me to her.”
Naomi Nightingale turned to her husband and cursed and insulted him.
“You bloody idiot!” She ranted. “How could you let this happen? What's going to happen to our daughter, huh? How do we save her now?”
Kane Nightingale swallowed as he felt the intense pressure coming from his wife.
“Naomi, this is way beyond me. The order came directly from the government. I can't fight it despite my connections and influence,” Kane tried to explain.
“None of this would have happened if you hadn't struck that stupid bet with Barry,” she retorted angrily at him. “If my daughter dies, I'll never forgive you, Kane. Find a way to save my daughter.”
Barry didn't want to be involved in their squabble. He had to get to his sister, and fast.
As he reached for the door, Reeves' cold hand grabbed his shoulder roughly.
“You bastard,” Reeves' voice was dark and grave. “Where the hell do you think you're going?”
Barry turned and was startled at how dark the shadows were in Reeve's eyes.
He had never seen anyone with so much hatred in their eyes the way Reeves' eyes were.
Barry slapped his hand away. “I'm going to get my sister. I'm done here.”
“Is that so,” Reeves said coldly, his eyes burning with murderous intent. “I don't know how you did it, but mark my words, this isn't over, Barry. I'll get you for this. That's a promise.”
Barry didn't respond. He pushed open the door and walked out with the doctor, who led the way to the ward they kept his sister.
* * * *
Barry felt glad when he saw his sister sitting on the bed.
She jumped and rushed up to hug him the moment he stepped inside the room.
Tears filled her eyes as she recounted her ordeal to her brother. “Big brother, where have you been? I was so scared. The landlord came in with a group of men. I did my best to defend myself, but they overpowered and took me away.”
Barry felt a burning rage inside him as he visualized his sister's struggle. “What happened next, Snow?”
Snow sobbed. “I was blindfolded and thrown into a van. When they took the blindfolded off, I found myself standing on a platform where people started bidding on me. Before I knew it, I was sold. I thought I would never see you again.”
