“Amelia, did you hear Marian quit?” Clive let go of Kristen and asked, trying to sound casual.
Amelia didn’t miss a beat. “She said she had a family emergency and needed to go back home. I told her to let you know before she left.”
Clive hesitated. “That’s it?”
Amelia’s voice was all innocence. “Is there something else I should know?”
He couldn’t come up with a reply.
Amelia added, “Oh, and Clive, I mentioned it to Grandma this morning when I called her. We really need someone reliable to help with the kids. She said she’ll send someone over.”
A nanny—if that was what Grandma wanted, Clive had no reason to argue.
“Okay, got it. We’ll do whatever Grandma thinks is best.”
“When are you guys coming home?” Amelia asked.
“We just left. Heading back now.”
Clive pulled out his keys, unlocked the car, and opened the back door so Timmy and Penny could climb in.
Kristen got in the front passenger seat.
Amelia could hear the doors closing on Clive’s end.
Suddenly, she brightened. “Clive, let’s do a video call. I want to see the kids.”
She didn’t wait for him to answer. The video call request popped up on Clive’s phone.
Of course, she did it on purpose—she knew Kristen would be sitting right there.
But Clive didn’t even hesitate. He declined the video and switched to an audio call.
Amelia stared at her phone, thrown off for just a second by the switch. She let out a cold, silent laugh before answering.
