For two years, Marian had worked at the house without ever asking for a single day off. But Amelia had barely been home for two weeks when Marian suddenly quit—no warning, just gone.
Clive called the house first. No answer.
Amelia wasn’t home? Where else would she be?
His frown deepened. He reached for his phone to call her directly, but after punching in the first few numbers, he realized he couldn’t remember the rest. Five years without her in his life, and now he couldn’t even recall her number. Maybe that was normal.
He scrolled through his contacts and finally found her old cell number. To his surprise, it actually rang.
He waited, listening, for almost a full minute. No one picked up.
Clive’s mood soured instantly. That never used to happen. Amelia always answered his calls, every single time.
He let out a slow breath and put his phone away. “We’ve had enough fun for today. Time to go home.” His tone was neutral, but his expression was noticeably colder.
The shuttle to the Ocean Park exit took less than twenty minutes, but Clive checked his phone five or six times along the way. Still nothing from Amelia.
When they finally reached the exit, he lost patience and called her again.
This time, after several rings, she answered.
“Hello…”
“Where are you? Why didn’t you answer? Why haven’t you called me back?” Clive’s voice was uncharacteristically cold, his irritation clear.
Amelia was sitting in the back of a taxi, listening to his rapid-fire questions. She almost laughed out loud.
With that accusing tone, you’d think she was the one sneaking off for a secret date at the amusement park.
She wanted to ask him if he even remembered what shame was. But she held back. Now wasn’t the time.
“I went to meet Diana. Some fans recognized her halfway through, so we switched clothes. I drew the fans away, and she got out safely. I ran so fast I didn’t even look at my phone. I just got in a cab.” Amelia answered calmly, her voice steady.
