The R&D department was the company’s crown jewel, protected by high-level security—fingerprint and iris scans just to get in. Lena pressed her finger to the scanner, leaned in for the facial recognition, and waited for the door to pop open like always.

Instead, red lights flashed and an emotionless voice echoed: “Fingerprint not recognized. Facial recognition failed. Please try again.”

Lena frowned, thrown off. The system was sensitive, sure, but she’d never had a problem before. Maybe she’d put her finger in the wrong place. She tried again.

Alarms blared a second time.

“Fingerprint not recognized. Facial recognition failed. You have one final attempt. Three failed scans will trigger an automatic alert.”

Lena’s face drained of color. She jerked her hand back, suddenly nervous to try a third time.

Behind her, her coworkers started shifting uncomfortably.

“What’s going on? Why isn’t it working?”

Ten long minutes passed before the system reset. Someone else stepped up to try, only to get the same error. Then another. Still nothing.
