She pulled herself together and stepped inside.
Penny, dressed in her ballet tutu, was twirling in the middle of the living room and showing off the new dance she’d learned today—she looked just like a graceful little swan. Amelia watched from the corner, warmth blooming in her chest. She couldn’t resist taking out her phone to snap a picture.
Penny had her tiny hands above her head, spinning with pure joy. Then she caught sight of Amelia at the doorway, phone aimed at her. Instantly, all that happiness drained from her face.
She stopped in her tracks, ran straight to Clive, and stretched her arms up for a hug, her way of asking to be picked up. Clive, still annoyed that Penny had “mistreated” his precious Kristen earlier, barely glanced at her and didn’t react.
Penny buried her face in Clive’s shoulder, making it obvious she wanted nothing to do with Amelia.
Amelia’s smile faltered and her eyes lost their spark.
She knew exactly what had happened. Penny had just started to warm up to her, and for her to suddenly turn this cold, only one person could be behind it—Kristen. That woman must have gotten to Penny again.
Amelia’s mind was clear. Clive had picked Penny up after work, so Kristen had probably been in the car with them.
She looked at Clive’s calm, collected face and felt a surge of anger rise in her throat. He had the nerve to bring his mistress to pick up the daughter Amelia had carried for nine months and nearly died giving birth to—and now, he was letting that woman fill her child’s head with lies.
Forcing herself to stay calm, Amelia greeted the Salmeron family as usual, her tone cool but polite.
“Dad. Mom. Caroline.”
Mrs. Salmeron and Caroline barely looked at her, their faces blank with irritation and boredom. Only Klaus Bailey nodded in her direction.
“You’re back.”
Amelia managed a stiff smile.
Bailey asked a few work questions, focusing on the Alzheimer’s research project she was leading.
Amelia answered smoothly, “I’ll have the detailed project proposal finished within a week. I really don’t think West Medicine could find a better partner.”
“Excellent, excellent,” Bailey said, clearly pleased.
