Amelia was pretty sure Clive had no clue she was in the car. He probably thought Timmy and Penny were both with the driver by now. So whatever he’d just said wasn’t meant for her.

Wait—was Clive actually planning to get off work with her and pick up the kids together? Amelia frowned. What was he thinking?

Penny, on the other hand, instantly wilted when she realized her dad wanted to pick her up from school with “that awful woman.” She’d been so excited, but now her whole mood crashed.

She opened her mouth to protest, but Clive’s assistant cut in first.

“Mr. Salmeron, your client’s here.”

“Penny, Daddy has to work now. I’ll see you tonight.” And just like that, Clive hung up.

Penny’s day just kept getting worse.

A few blocks from school, she told Amelia, “Stop the car. I’ll get out here.”

They were already in the school’s security zone—patrols, cameras, roadblocks, the works. It was totally safe, so Amelia just pulled over. Penny couldn’t get out fast enough. She didn’t even look back as she hurried away.

No way was she letting anyone see Amelia dropping her off.

She barely made it to the school gate before running into her best friends—Tina and Sydney, the same girls she’d FaceTimed with last night at The Hollow Beat.

Seeing them, Penny forced a big grin and ran over.

But then, right on cue, Amelia called from behind.

“Penny!”

Penny pretended not to hear, but Tina and Sydney both turned.

“Penny, that lady’s calling you,” Sydney said, pointing.

Resigned, Penny turned back. The last thing she wanted was for Amelia to come anywhere near her friends. She jogged over, blocking Amelia before she could get close.

“I told you not to come over here,” Penny muttered, voice low and eyes darting around, terrified someone else might see.
