Amelia stared out the window, barely paying attention to anything around her.
Ever since she’d found out how expensive that luxury car was, she knew—no way was it from Diana. Which meant the “Selfhelper” who’d been messaging her wasn’t Diana either.
It all made sense now. The silent voice calls, the way those texts felt so unlike Diana—of course they weren’t her.
So who was it?
She racked her brain, but couldn’t think of anyone who fit. Whoever it was had to be on her side—no enemy would go this far to help her.
But if it was a friend, who? She barely had any friends, and none with the means to just casually give her a million-dollar car. Not a single one.
Zero.
Maybe before she turned seven, her world was different. Maybe then, being surrounded by wealthy people was normal. But after that, her whole life collapsed. She was like a princess kicked out of her candy castle and dumped into the real world—cold and unforgiving.
And it was her own father, Hank, who did it.
Amelia squeezed her eyes shut, fighting back the anger that threatened to bubble up.
It had been twenty years, but she still remembered that day as if it were yesterday.
Daddy, please don’t go. I’ll be so good, I promise. Please, just go see Mom at the hospital…
The rain had poured down in sheets, soaking her as she clung to the hem of his coat, begging him to stay. But he shoved her away, hard.
She hit the mud, filthy and shivering. When she looked up, she saw another little girl inside the car, wearing a sky-blue princess dress, her hair perfect, a sparkling crystal crown on her head. The girl looked back at Amelia with a wrinkle of her nose, like she was staring at something dirty.
Amelia heard her call out, Daddy.
Daddy, I’m hungry. Can we go home now?
The man who’d just pushed Amelia away turned to the girl with a warm, gentle smile.
My little princess is hungry? Let’s go home then.
No. He couldn’t leave. Mom was still in the hospital, waiting for him.
