Kristen let out a laugh. “You’re such a sweetheart—always know just what to say to make me feel better.”
Penny grinned wide. “I’m not just saying it! I mean it.” She twisted around, searching for backup. “Timmy, you agree with me, right? Tell her!”
Amelia couldn’t see Timmy from where she was standing, but after a few seconds, his voice drifted over.
“Yeah, you’re right about everything,” Timmy said, sounding a little helpless.
But if you really listened, he was actually smiling as he said it.
…
Amelia’s hand, halfway to the door, hung in the air for a moment before she quietly let it fall. What was the point of going in now?
Even if she walked in and said she was the one who brought up the desserts, nobody would really care.
She thought about it. If she hadn’t gone back to the lab to straighten herself up and had just walked in with the desserts right away, would it have made any difference?
Penny would still have brushed her off. Clive probably wouldn’t have said anything. And as soon as Kristen walked in, Penny’s whole face would light up, and she’d run straight into her arms, happy as could be…
Amelia closed her eyes for a second, fighting down that bitter feeling in her throat. Then she turned and slipped away quietly.
Back in the office, Timmy noticed Clive seemed distracted, checking his phone more than once.
“Dad, are you waiting for someone to call?”
Kristen, still cradling Penny while they watched cartoons, shot a quick look over, her face giving nothing away.
“It’s nothing,” Clive finally said, setting aside the Rubik’s Cube he’d just finished. He picked up his phone and stood. “I’m stepping out for a bit. Wait here with Aunt Kristen and be good, okay? Don’t go wandering off.”
He barely finished the reminder before he was out the door.
Kristen watched his tall, broad-shouldered figure disappear down the hallway, her gaze thoughtful. He was headed for the research labs…
Clive stepped into the elevator, pressed the button for the right floor, and watched as the doors closed. His own reflection stared back at him—handsome, but clouded with frustration.
