Clive glanced over at Lena, who was just stepping out of the second R&D department, ready to head home for the day. His face was dark, and he barely nodded at her.

“Salmeron, are you here to see Kristen? She just went upstairs… Salmeron?”

Lena didn’t even get to finish her sentence before Clive turned and walked away, leaving her standing there, totally confused.

“What’s Salmeron doing here?” Lena muttered, sneaking a look at the first R&D department across the hall. Suddenly, a wild thought flashed through her mind.

No way… could he be here for Amelia?

She snorted at herself the next second. As if. With Kristen around, who would ever pay attention to someone as stubborn and plain as Amelia? Clive probably couldn’t wait to be rid of her.

After leaving Clive’s office, Amelia went straight home.

Donna was out on the terrace, watering the flowers. When she saw Amelia come in alone, she looked surprised.

“Ma’am,” Donna called out, stepping inside, a bit puzzled. “How come you’re back by yourself? Where are Mr. Salmeron and the kids?”

She’d spent the whole afternoon making desserts, hoping Amelia would take them to the kids. Even if it didn’t magically fix everything, at least it would give the three of them a little more time together.

A family of four should come home together, shouldn’t they?

Amelia kept her expression calm. “Clive still has some work to finish, and the kids are staying with him at the office. I was too tired today, so I came back first. Thank you for the desserts, Donna. Timmy and Penny loved them.”

She gave Donna a small, tired smile and headed upstairs.

Donna watched her go, worry creasing her brow. She just knew things weren’t as simple as Amelia made them sound.
