Clive took a long drag from his cigarette, then crushed it out on the circle of smooth stones under the potted plant.
“What do you want her to do? If this is your hard work, you deserve your share of the benefits.” Clive’s voice was calm as he stared into the endless night. “As for Amelia, you don’t need to worry about her…”
…
Amelia was deep in her work, so focused she barely heard the knock at the door.
Three soft taps, a short pause, then three more. The rhythm was so cute it made her smile.
She got up and opened the door.
Just as she expected, Timmy stood there with a thick programming book clutched to his chest. Amelia glanced at the cover—it was the kind of textbook only grad students used.
Timmy looked a little awkward, scratching at his head. “There’s something I don’t get. Can I ask you about it?”
Amelia smiled. “Of course, sweetheart. I always have time for you.”
For some reason, whenever she called him sweetheart, Timmy felt totally at ease.
She let him in, and he settled onto the small sofa. Amelia sat next to him, patiently breaking down the problem, sketching out ideas and jotting notes as she explained.
She knew Timmy was smart enough to figure out most things on his own, so instead of just giving him the answer, she walked him through the logic step by step. Timmy picked it up fast, and before long, he was using what she’d shown him to solve other problems too.
“You’re amazing, sweetheart.” Amelia couldn’t help herself—she kissed him on the forehead. “I’m so proud of you.”
Timmy froze. He wasn’t anything like Penny, who loved hugs. He didn’t really like being touched. Even when Dad praised him, it never went beyond a quick pat on the head.
Amelia’s kiss made his ears go red. He squirmed away a little, but not too far.
“You shouldn’t just kiss me like that…” he muttered. Then, worried he sounded too cold, he added, “Dad never does that.”
Amelia melted at how cute he was.
“Okay, next time I want to kiss you, I’ll warn you first.”
Timmy went quiet. That didn’t sound right, but he didn’t know what to say.
