“Amelia, do you even hear yourself right now?” Clive’s voice was cold, his tall frame looming over her, the anger practically rolling off him. “You’re talking about divorce? Have you lost your mind?”
She’d really gone there—used divorce as a weapon, just to get his attention. All out of jealousy. He couldn’t believe it.
But Amelia was done with the endless back-and-forth. As far as she was concerned, the divorce papers would be on his desk soon enough, courtesy of her lawyer. There was nothing left to say tonight, no point in wasting her breath.
“I just want to go upstairs and see Penny. Clive, if you’re any kind of man—if you’re really Penny’s father—let me go.”
Clive’s eyes narrowed, a cold glint flashing in them. Not a man? Clearly, he’d made life too easy for her.
Amelia turned to leave, barely made it two steps before pain shot through her scalp. Clive grabbed her hair, yanking her back, and slammed her hard against the wall.
“Not a man, huh?” His voice was low, almost soft, but there was nothing gentle in his eyes—they were ice. His fingers twisted in her hair, sometimes tight, sometimes loose, leaving her unable to tell if it was a threat or something else.
“Didn’t I tell you not to use that kind of trick on me, Amelia?”
“You’re such an asshole!” she spat, finally snapping. She pulled her knee up, aiming straight for his groin.
But Clive was faster. He pinned her knee with his hand, his face clouded over with anger, and then his mouth crashed down on hers.
It wasn’t a kiss. It was punishment. It was rough and humiliating. She tasted alcohol on his breath, sharp and bitter. Disgusted, she turned her head away and drove her knuckles hard into the side of his neck, aiming for that sensitive spot.
Clive grunted, pain twisting his face as if a thousand ants were crawling under his skin. He stumbled, almost losing his balance.
Amelia didn’t hesitate. She shoved him away and slapped him, hard, across the face.
“You disgust me,” she said, her voice shaking. She watched the red handprint bloom on his cheek, but there was no satisfaction. Just exhaustion and heartbreak.
