Amelia turned just as the front doors swung open. Two men in black suits were dragging Liliana inside, practically shoving her straight into Kristen.
Liliana was a mess—wild-eyed and desperate, thrashing so hard the guards couldn’t hold onto her. She broke free and lunged at Kristen, grabbing her arm in a death grip. “You have to tell them! Don’t let them call the cops on me. It was you—you paid me, you told me what to do! I didn’t know anything!”
Kristen’s eyes flashed with irritation. “Let go of me! Who even are you?” she snapped, yanking her arm back as she scrambled to figure out what to say or do next.
Then she spotted Amelia walking over, and all the color drained from her face.
What is she doing here?
Liliana clung even tighter, panic rising in her voice. “How can you pretend you don’t know me? We just talked! You gave me the money and told me to trick her into the bathroom. You said as soon as I mentioned someone was hurt, she’d run to help!”
Kristen’s only thought was to deny everything.
“Help! Somebody help! I don’t know this crazy woman!” she screamed, putting on her best damsel-in-distress act.
Amelia watched her, cold and unimpressed, about to step in when a tall, familiar figure rushed into the chaos.
Clive stormed in like some kind of hero, his voice sharp. “What do you think you’re doing?” He shoved Liliana aside and pulled Kristen behind him, shielding her as if she were made of glass.
Seven years of marriage, and he’d never once protected Amelia like that.
But for Kristen? He’d always be there to save her, no matter what.
Amelia couldn’t help the bitter smile tugging at her lips. What a pair—her cheating husband and his scheming mistress. Perfect for each other.
