On the drive back to the villa, Clive’s phone buzzed with a call from Aiden.
“Mr. Salmeron, the diamond necklace has been delivered.”
Clive asked right away, “Did you give it to her yourself?”
“I did.”
He couldn’t help feeling a little tense. “Did… she say anything?”
“Nope. I told her it was from you, that you’d picked it out just for her. She seemed pretty happy, didn’t ask anything, just accepted it.”
Clive squeezed the steering wheel, then let out a quiet breath. Aiden could be stubborn sometimes, but he was honest and dependable, not the type to sugarcoat things or play both sides. That was exactly why Clive had kept him around as his assistant for so long.
If Aiden said Amelia liked the necklace, then she must have really liked it.
For the first time that day, Clive felt his nerves settle. His heart landed right back in his chest where it belonged.
A hint of a smile played at his lips. “Alright. Thanks.”
He pulled off his earpiece with one hand, tossing it aside. A small, unreadable laugh slipped out.
All this time, he’d thought Amelia wasn’t interested in jewelry or luxury gifts. Turns out, she wasn’t so different from anyone else—who could say no to a diamond necklace?
Or maybe it went deeper than that. Maybe Amelia had always wanted things like this, but coming from so little, she’d never really learned what they were worth. She’d married up into his world, always careful, always putting him first, never daring to ask for anything extra.
Winning a woman over really did come down to spending money. And if one gift didn’t work, he’d just try two.
Clive glanced at his phone. Amelia still hadn’t replied to his last message.
But this time, he didn’t care. He actually found it funny, a little smug even.
She’d already accepted the necklace, yet she was still pretending she was above it all.
Looking back, he realized he’d never really given Amelia anything before. Even their wedding rings had been borrowed from Mrs. Salmeron, just for show at the ceremony.
Honestly, when it came to gifts, he owed her.
