Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 28

R&D Department.

Aiden stuck close to Amelia as she made her way through the department, giving her the lowdown on everything that had changed since she’d been gone.

Amelia took it all in, her face unreadable. By the time they finished the tour, she already had a pretty good sense of what was going on. The team she’d built from scratch years ago was almost completely gone. The few who’d stayed behind had been pushed aside, barely involved in anything important anymore.

“Aiden, who’s running R&D these days?” she asked.

Clive had promised her that her roles—R&D Director and Chief Medical Officer—would be waiting for her.

“It’s Kristen. Ms. Watts is acting as director for now,” Aiden answered honestly. When he mentioned Kristen, Amelia caught a flicker of sympathy in his eyes.

She got the picture immediately.

Whatever was going on between Kristen and Clive, it had probably become the company’s worst-kept secret.

“Alright.” Amelia managed a calm smile. “Could you take me to my office now, Aiden?”

She remembered she still had some important documents locked up in her office safe.

But before Aiden could reply, a voice rang out from down the hall—furious, unmistakable.

“Lena, what are you doing? This is Ms. Sadinton’s office! Get that stuff out of here, right now!”

Amelia froze for a second.

She knew that voice. It was Rachel—her old friend and former mentee from university. Back then, Rachel had been her shadow, following her into Cloudcrest after graduation. She’d worked on almost every project with Amelia, always giving it her all.

Amelia never expected Rachel would still be here after all these years. With her talent, she could’ve gone anywhere.

“Aiden, let’s go see what’s happening,” Amelia said, worry creeping into her voice.

Rachel’s voice was coming from the direction of her old office. Amelia hurried after Aiden, and as they reached the doorway, a pile of things came flying out—Rachel tossing them in frustration. A company badge landed right at Amelia’s feet.

Rachel clenched her fists so tightly her knuckles turned white. She ripped off her own badge, ready to fire back, when a cool, familiar voice cut through the tension.

“Is that so? I didn’t know Ms. Watts had that much power.”

Rachel froze. She spun around and saw Amelia standing in the doorway, sunglasses on, calm as ever. Rachel’s eyes went wide and filled with tears.

“Amelia!” Rachel ran over and threw her arms around her, her voice shaky with relief. “I knew you’d be back. I just knew it!”

Amelia hugged her, gently patting her back. “Thank you, Rachel. Thank you for waiting for me.”

Rachel drew back, suddenly noticing something was off. “Amelia, what happened to your eyes?” she asked, worry all over her face.

Amelia gave her a gentle smile. “It’s just temporary blindness. The doctors say I’ll recover soon, so don’t worry.”

Lena, who’d only joined the company recently, had never actually met Amelia. But seeing Rachel’s reaction—and spotting Aiden, Clive’s right-hand man, at Amelia’s side—she was starting to realize just who she was dealing with.
