So this woman—no doubt about it—had to be Amelia herself, the one everyone thought was as good as dead for five years.
Once Lena was sure who she was dealing with, she looked Amelia up and down, her eyes full of obvious dislike and suspicion. She didn’t even bother to hide it.
Amelia couldn’t care less.
It was clear Lena was one of Kristen’s people. Of course she’d have a problem with Amelia. Nothing new.
Lena strolled over, voice dripping with fake sweetness. “Ms. Salmeron, I have to say, meeting you in person is… something else.”
Amelia just raised an eyebrow and smiled, cool and unbothered. “Ms. Salmeron? For the last seven years, everyone at this company’s called me either Ms. Salmeron or Mrs. Salmeron. So, are you ignoring my position as manager, or just pretending I’m not Mrs. Salmeron?”
She said it lightly, but there was steel in her words, the kind that made Lena’s face go red with embarrassment.
Right then, Lena’s eyes lit up. She waved excitedly at someone behind Amelia. “Kristen!”
Amelia turned, her sunglasses hiding any hint of what she was thinking as she watched Kristen walk over.
At last. Face to face.
Kristen looked flawless, dressed in a sharp white suit, her makeup soft and perfect, every curl of her chestnut hair looking like it took a team of stylists to get just right.
“Amelia.” Kristen stopped right in front of her, flashing a warm, easy smile. “Salmeron told me you were here. I was worried Aiden might not be thoughtful enough, so I came to see if you needed anything.”
That almost made Amelia laugh. The way Kristen said it, you’d think she ran the place and Amelia was just some visitor.
Lena immediately looped her arm through Kristen’s, using the chance to complain. “Kristen, I just finished moving your things into the office, when Rachel barged in and started making a scene! She’s questioning Salmeron’s decision!”
Rachel, frustrated, jumped in. “Lena, stop twisting things!”
She knew what Amelia was like—quiet, never one to fight, always willing to put herself last. She’d been the same way in college: brilliant, but incredibly easygoing. The kind of person who’d rather take the fall herself than make things hard for others. A pushover, if she was being honest.
Rachel frowned, anxious. With so many people backing Kristen, she was sure Amelia would give in again, let herself be pressured into stepping aside.
But Amelia just smiled slightly, her voice cool and steady. “If that’s how everyone feels, I’ll make my position clear right now.”
Rachel could almost guess what was coming—Amelia would back down, say she wouldn’t fight Kristen for the job.
But Amelia’s next words were steady and sharp, every syllable ringing out:
“This office, and the R&D manager’s position—I’m not giving up either.”
