Belle was absolutely buzzing as she hurried after him. “Coming, Dr. Wade!”
Getting one-on-one time with her idol? There was no way she’d pass that up.
She threw Amelia a quick, dramatic air kiss over her shoulder.
Amelia had never seen Belle in such high spirits before and couldn’t help but laugh. Then she picked up the stack of files in front of her, eyes scanning the pages. She was serious about the collaboration with Dr. Wade’s team—no harm in getting a head start.
Meanwhile—
Kristen and Clive followed Emmery into the research center for a national top-level project. Kristen lingered at the back, eyes darting everywhere, taking in every detail. If they hadn’t confiscated her phone at the entrance, she’d have snapped a bunch of photos already—this was the kind of thing that would look amazing on her social media.
Being part of a national S-level project? It would make her public image shine even brighter.
“Emmery, what’s that building over there?” Kristen asked, pointing at a half-dome structure nearby, curiosity plain on her face.
Emmery’s expression barely flickered when he heard her use his first name so casually, but since they were guests, he kept his annoyance to himself. He glanced where she pointed and answered evenly, “Sorry, Ms. Watts. That area’s classified. I can’t discuss it.”
Kristen arched a brow but let it go gracefully. “Sorry, I just get a little too curious sometimes.”
Her good-natured reply made Emmery wonder if he’d been too curt. He glanced at her again, but Kristen just smiled, her eyes soft and friendly.
Maybe she had connections and was a little bold, but she seemed pretty easy-going.
Emmery led them upstairs to a meeting room on the second floor.
He poured them each a glass of water. “The contracts should be here any minute. I’ll go check on them. Once they arrive, you can review and sign if everything looks good.”
Clive spoke up, “Will Dr. Wade be joining us?”
Emmery looked a bit puzzled. “Dr. Wade’s in his office upstairs.”
Their work was only a small part of the project, and contracts always went through Emmery. Did they really expect to see Dr. Wade personally?
Clive was about to say more when Kristen jumped in, “Emmery, why don’t you check on the contracts? Signing is the most important thing today. We’ll wait here.”
After Emmery left, Kristen leaned closer to Clive. “Clive, I forgot to tell you—Dr. Wade mentioned on the phone he’s super busy today and can’t have lunch with us. Once we sign, Emmery will stamp it and pass it along to Dr. Wade for his signature.”
Clive’s face fell. “So we’re not going to see Diego at all?”
He’d spent extra time on his appearance, hoping to meet Diego face-to-face, maybe have lunch, and make a connection.
Kristen gave him a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry, we’ll be working with Dr. Wade on this project. There’ll be plenty of chances to talk—and grabbing lunch together will be easy.”
Clive still looked disappointed, but gave in. “Fine, next time.”
Kristen could tell he was frustrated. She reached over and squeezed his hand.
“Clive, I’ll set up a one-on-one with Dr. Wade for you next time, okay? Don’t be upset.”
