Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 34

Clive was in his office, finishing up bandaging Kristen’s swollen hand when his phone buzzed on the desk. He glanced at the screen—Cameron again. Clive just shook his head. Cameron’s dislike for Amelia was old news, nothing worth getting worked up over. He set the phone aside without replying.

By the time he looked up, Kristen had already started putting the first aid kit away.

“I’ll take care of that,” Clive offered, reaching for the kit. But Kristen slid it out of his reach, flashing him a mischievous smile.

“If you keep pampering me over a tiny injury like this, Mr. Salmeron, I’ll be out of a job before I know it.”

Her teasing made him relax, his frown easing away. Then, out of nowhere, Kristen leaned in, brushing her fingers across his brow.

He froze, letting her linger a moment.

“Clive,” she said softly, rising on tiptoe so her eyes met his—just like she used to do back when they were both students. “Don’t frown because of me. I like it better when you smile.”

Something shifted in Clive’s gaze, but before he could answer, Kristen pulled away. She put the first aid kit back, her whole demeanor snapping back to businesslike.

“I’ll go prep the conference room and let the department heads know about the meeting. You can come by in about twenty minutes,” she said, already halfway to the door.

“Ms. Watts,” Clive called after her, “your appointment letter’s coming this afternoon. I promised you the R&D manager position, and that’s not changing.”

Kristen couldn’t help the smile that flickered across her face, but she quickly reined it in.

“But… what about Mrs. Salmeron?”

His thoughts were interrupted by another call, this time from the family’s old estate. He straightened up and answered.

Before he could say a word, Klaus’s familiar, low voice rumbled through the line.

“Clive, I was at the hospital for my check-up today. The director told me Amelia woke up?”

Klaus was a shareholder at the hospital, so he was always in the loop. And Clive remembered today was one of his regular appointments for his hypertension.

Clive pinched the bridge of his nose, already feeling exhausted. “Yeah, she woke up a couple days ago. She still can’t see, though. I was waiting for her to get a bit better before letting you know.”
