Amelia opened her laptop and pulled up the core Green Wall documents Dr. Wade had sent her. She wanted to get a jumpstart on everything before her first day.
Her phone lit up next to her hand. It was a message from Will.
Will: Home yet?
She could pretty much tell by now that Will liked her—not just as a friend. Acting clueless and pretending he was just being nice felt fake at this point. But since he hadn’t said anything, there was no way she’d bring it up first.
Besides, romance was the last thing on her mind tonight.
She just replied: Yeah.
The little typing bubble showed up, then disappeared, then came back. After a long pause, Will finally sent: Get some rest. Sweet dreams.
Amelia: Okay.
Across the city, Will stared at her one-word reply and let out a resigned, almost sad laugh.
She used to reply with at least a “Goodnight.” Now that she probably knew how he felt, she was already starting to keep her distance.
Amelia went back to reading, but she couldn't focus. She was barely making it through a page before losing her place again.
All she could think about was Penny, her name flashing in her mind like a giant red warning sign.
A heavy ache settled in her chest.
In Penny’s heart, she probably didn’t even mean a tenth as much as Kristen.
It was already after eleven.
Amelia was about to take a shower and call it a night when her phone rang. Timmy’s name popped up.
She answered immediately, softening her voice. “Timmy, what’s going on?”
Her normally steady son sounded panicked, almost desperate. “It’s Penny. She’s not feeling well. She keeps having nightmares, yelling for Mom to save her, saying ‘Don’t leave me.’ I woke her up, and she just started throwing up…”
Amelia’s heart dropped.
Those symptoms—panic, confusion, nausea—sounded like something had seriously scared Penny.
She tried to keep Timmy calm. “Where’s your dad? Is any adult home with you?”
“After dinner, the driver brought us back. Dad left with Aunt Kristen and hasn’t come home. I tried calling him, but he didn’t answer. Donna’s here, and she already called Dr. Reed.”
Amelia’s hands were shaking with anger.
Clive—out on a date with Kristen, ignoring calls from his own kids.
It would take her almost two hours to get back to the house, and even then, if Penny didn’t want to see her, showing up now would probably just make things worse.
