They probably paid for a few press releases too, just to push Caroline’s bad news out of the spotlight.
Amelia tapped out a message with one hand.
Amelia: [Yeah, tomorrow morning at nine, I’m going to the courthouse with Clive to get the divorce finalized.]
She’d barely hit send before Diana’s chat showed “typing” and then—bam—a twenty-second voice message landed in her inbox.
Amelia was ready. She held her phone away from her ear as she hit play.
Right on cue, Diana’s voice blasted out, shrill with excitement.
Diana: “Oh my God, ahhhh! This is amazing news! Today is seriously the best day ever! Babe, the moment you get that divorce certificate, send me a pic. I’m framing it and passing it down as a family heirloom, so Clive’s trashy legacy lives on forever!”
Amelia couldn’t help but laugh.
Then Diana sent another message.
Diana: “Damn, Kristen is acting up again! That drama queen is on a roll!”
Diana always used a burner account to stalk the cheater couple’s Twitter. At first, she was trying to dig up dirt for Amelia’s divorce case, but now she was just here for the drama.
Amelia clicked the link Diana sent and landed straight on Kristen’s alt account.
Kristen had posted a photo of two hands clasped together.
The hand underneath was obviously a man’s, a fancy watch peeking out from under his sleeve.
The caption said: [With the right person, no matter how long it takes, fate always brings you together.]
Amelia recognized that hand instantly. It was Clive’s.
So he’d gone to the hospital again to keep Kristen company.
But what really caught Amelia’s eye was a chubby little hand poking into the corner of the photo.
Her breath hitched.
That hand—Penny’s. She was there too.
Amelia closed her eyes, a wave of helplessness washing over her.
She quickly told Diana good night, then, after hesitating, sent a message to Andrew: [Andrew, are you still awake?]
He replied instantly: [Yes. If you need anything, just call.]
Amelia called him.
He picked up on the first ring.
“Ms. Sadinton.”
Amelia explained Clive had already signed the divorce papers, and that tomorrow morning at nine, they’d be at the courthouse to make it official.
