Hospital Room

Clive woke up with a start, completely disoriented. He had no idea when he’d ended up in a hospital bed.

Kristen was curled up in his arms, fast asleep, her hand still holding tightly to his.

He blinked, trying to piece things together. Carefully, he slid his hand out of hers and sat up. At the foot of the bed, Penny was passed out on the little couch, a blanket draped over her shoulders. Kristen must have covered her.

Clive pressed his fingers to his temples, still groggy. How did I even fall asleep?

He remembered driving Penny back to the house when Kristen called him, crying her eyes out. She said she was scared and in pain. Clive couldn’t stop thinking about how Mrs. Salmeron’s people had treated her that day, so he’d turned around and come straight to the hospital.

His plan was just to check on Kristen and go.

But then she’d grabbed his hand, her eyes swimming with tears, and told him every time she closed her eyes, she saw someone coming to take her away.

So he stayed, figuring he’d leave once she fell asleep.

But somehow, he’d ended up asleep too. And now he was in her hospital bed.

Sitting up, he caught a faint, sweet scent in the air. He glanced over and spotted a little incense burner on the nightstand.

He barely had time to think about it. It was almost one in the morning.

Just as he was about to get out of bed, a soft, slender arm slid around his waist from behind. Kristen pressed her cheek to his back.

“Clive…” Her voice was husky and half-asleep, sweet enough to make his heart skip a beat. “Where are you going? Please don’t leave…”

But in the next second, her dreamy expression shifted. She felt Clive gently remove her arm.

He’d already gotten up and turned to face her. “Are you in pain? I can call the doctor.”

Kristen shook her head, her voice soft. “As long as you’re here, nothing hurts.”

Clive reached out, brushing his fingers over her cheek. He kept his tone gentle. “Get some rest, okay? I’ll have a nurse stay with you tonight. I need to take Penny home—Timmy’s still waiting for us.”

He didn’t even finish before Kristen suddenly threw her arms around his neck, clinging to him.

Clive froze, about to push her away, when he felt her tears soaking into his skin.

“Clive, I’m really scared… I’m afraid if you leave tonight, you’ll never come back. I’m scared your heart will go back to Amelia…”

Amelia.

A cold, distant image of her flashed through Clive’s mind. He spoke quietly, “Amelia and I already signed the divorce papers. Tomorrow at nine, we’ll go to the courthouse and make it official.”

Kristen let go, her face lighting up. “Clive, then after that, we can—”
