Amelia was in her car when her phone started buzzing nonstop—Sammy was blowing up her messages.
Call me. Urgent.
They were barely allies these days, but whatever. She sighed, hit dial, and waited. Nothing. Silence. Amelia frowned, checked the connection, then raised her voice a little without taking her eyes off the road. “Sammy?”
A low, teasing voice came through, practically dripping amusement. “Right here, sweetheart.”
Amelia’s hands slipped on the wheel. The car jerked, veering dangerously close to the guardrail.
She slammed on the brakes and snapped, “Sammy, you—”
If you’re crazy, go deal with it.
She didn’t even get the words out before his voice oozed through the speaker again.
“Careful, babe. Eyes on the road.” He must’ve heard her slam the brakes. “I’m having a heart-to-heart with my brother. I’ll catch you later.”
Amelia’s brows drew together.
He was with Clive?
So that “sweetheart” wasn’t just to annoy her—Sammy was really trying to piss Clive off. Not surprising. Clive spent years using her as a prop, showing off their “perfect marriage” in front of Sammy, especially during all those heir evaluations. Clive always played up his happy, stable marriage, racking up points and making sure everyone saw Sammy as the unreliable playboy.
Now Sammy finally had an opening to get payback.
“Can’t bear to hang up, sweetheart? Give me a kiss.” Sammy’s voice was all mock affection, and Amelia could practically hear the smirk as he made a big show of blowing her a kiss through the phone.
She hung up instantly.
She shivered, completely grossed out. Sammy really was something else—if being shameless was a crime, he’d have been locked up ages ago.
Meanwhile, up in the GM’s office, Sammy was practically glowing. He’d just taken a punch, but seeing Clive’s face turn stormy made it all worth it.
“Come on, bro, loosen up.” Sammy wandered over, clapping Clive on the shoulder. “You and Amelia are divorced now. You go your way, she goes hers. If she marries me, we’ll be even more like family—keeping things in the family, right?”
Only Sammy could say stuff like that with a straight face.
