Robert shot Clive a look over the rim of his glasses, pure disgust flickering in his eyes.
Clive didn’t recognize him, but Robert knew exactly who Clive was. How could he forget? Back in those days, his junior was always talking about Clive. Clive this, Clive that—he’d heard the name so often it was practically burned into his brain.
Robert flashed a cold, fake smile. “You must know her pretty well, Salmeron. She chased after you for years. Don’t tell me you never even learned her name?”
The last bit of hope Clive was holding onto disappeared in an instant. His throat felt tight, and for a moment, he couldn’t get a word out.
Suddenly, Robert’s attention shifted to something behind Clive. He raised his hand and called out, “Ms. Sadinton, why are you sitting way over there? We’ve all been waiting for you!”
Clive turned around, stiff and awkward.
Amelia was sitting quietly in the corner, calm and composed. She didn’t look much different than she used to, but there was no ignoring her now—she seemed to glow under the attention of everyone in the room.
She wasn’t some wallflower anymore.
Clive watched, helpless, as Amelia stood up and walked over, her presence growing stronger with every step. He felt something inside him crumble.
Even Dr. Wade shifted over so she could take the main seat at the table.
Amelia met Clive’s frozen stare with a soft, polite smile, and reached out her hand. “Salmeron, let’s get reacquainted. I’m Amelia, Head of Group A at Green Wall.”
Clive had no idea what kind of expression he was making. He tried to smile, but his mouth just wouldn’t move right.
Amelia—his client? The realization hit him like a bucket of ice water. He was completely thrown, struggling to process what was happening. It took everything he had to pull himself together.
He reached out to shake her hand, but Amelia smoothly drew hers back before he could.
Without missing a beat, she turned to Kristen. “Ms. Watts, would you show us to the conference room?”
Kristen forced a stiff smile. “Of course, Ms. Sadinton. Right this way.”
