Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 48

Amelia felt lighter than she had in years, like she could finally breathe again. Dropping the act—stopping all the pretending—turned out to be incredibly freeing. If only she could cut ties with the Salmeron family for real. But she knew it wasn’t time yet.

Divorce would be easy enough. What really mattered was what she’d walk away with afterward.

Her biggest wish? Custody of her two kids. But right now, fighting Clive for them would be a losing battle.

She took a deep breath and steadied herself. Just ahead was the quiet little home where Mrs. Salmeron lived.

As Amelia got closer, the door opened and someone stepped outside. When the woman spotted Amelia, her eyes went wide and she hurried over, both thrilled and relieved.

“Ma’am! Oh my goodness, you’re finally awake!”

Amelia smiled, immediately recognizing her. “Hi, Tara.”

Tara had been with Mrs. Salmeron for twenty years—she was practically family herself.

Only then did Tara notice Amelia’s unfocused eyes and the white cane in her hand. Worry flashed across Tara’s face. “Your eyes…?”

“It’s okay,” Amelia said, her tone gentle. “The doctor said my vision should come back soon.”

Tara let out a breath and grinned, slipping her arm through Amelia’s and guiding her gently up the steps. “Be careful, there’s a step here.”

“Mrs. Salmeron, look who’s here!” Tara called out, her voice full of energy.

As they walked, Amelia subtly checked Tara’s pulse—steady and strong, healthier than most people half her age.

Inside, Mrs. Salmeron was lounging on a chaise, eyes closed, turning prayer beads in her hand. She didn’t look up when Tara and Amelia came in.

“What’s all that racket? Is Clive here with Timmy and Penny? Tara, keep the kids here. And those things Ms. Watts brought last time—give them back to Clive and tell him to throw them away! Who does that woman think she is, strutting in here with gifts, acting like she’s the lady of the house? Ridiculous.”

Tara shot Amelia an awkward look.

Amelia’s face stayed calm, but she understood immediately. “Ms. Watts” could only mean Kristen.

Amelia glanced over at the pile of prayer books in the corner. Her eyes stung with tears.

“Thank you, Grandma,” she whispered.

She bent down and hugged Mrs. Salmeron tight, soaking up the comfort she’d missed for so long.

Once she’d pulled herself together, Amelia remembered why she was here.

“Grandma, I heard your headaches came back. Has it been really bad? Let me check your pulse and do a little acupuncture for you.”

Tara hesitated. “Ma’am, your eyesight isn’t back yet. Are you sure you can do it?”

Amelia smiled, calm and sure. “I’ve already done acupuncture on my own legs. Trust me, I can handle it.”

Even if she really were blind, she’d know every pressure point by heart. This was nothing for her.
