Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 63

“No… Officer, please don’t take me away…” Penny whimpered in her sleep, her tiny face scrunched up in fear, head tossing restlessly on the pillow.

Amelia’s heart twisted painfully at the sight of her daughter so scared, so fragile.

But the next thing Penny cried out hit Amelia even harder, cutting deeper than any wound.

“Momma Kristen, Momma Kristen, help me…”

Amelia felt completely drained, like all the strength had left her body. She crouched beside Penny’s bed, reached out, and gently wrapped her fingers around her daughter’s trembling hand. Her eyes stung, tears threatening to fall, but she held them back.

Clive didn’t come home that night.

Amelia wasn’t surprised. She didn’t even care.

The next morning, she got up and headed downstairs. Marian was already in the kitchen, moving quickly as she got breakfast ready.

Amelia stood quietly by the doorway, watching Marian take two prime cuts of steak from the fridge and slip them into her own bag. Then she pulled out two cheap cuts of beef from a grocery sack and put those in the pan instead.

“Marian.” Amelia’s voice broke the silence.

Marian jumped, startled. She spun around, looking guilty when she saw Amelia standing there.

“Mrs. Salmeron, you’re up early…”

“Yeah. Are you making breakfast?” Amelia asked, her tone calm.

Marian glanced at Amelia’s blank, unseeing eyes and let out a breath, relaxing a little.

A blind woman. Nothing to worry about.

“Yes, ma’am. Mr. Salmeron called and asked me to come early and make breakfast for you and the kids. The driver will be here in half an hour to take Timmy and Penny to school.”

“What’s for breakfast today?” Amelia asked.
